Sir Alex Hopes For Old Pals' Act
Sir Alex Ferguson admits United's goalless draw with Sunderland was a 'killer blow', but still hopes Bolton can keep his side's title challenge alive.
The Trotters, managed by Sir Alex's close friend Sam Allardyce, host Chelsea at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday. A defeat for the Blues will keep United six points behind Jose Mourinho's side.
"It's a killer blow, but we can't give up, we've come too far," Sir Alex told MUTV. "Our form has been too good. We've got to look at it as Sunderland can do it to us, maybe other teams can do it to Chelsea.
"That is football, and I'm clinging to the hope that Bolton can get us a result. Friends never let you down, and Sam won't let me down tomorrow. Hopefully I'm right."
The Scot paid tribute to Sunderland, who he feels played without inhibitions because of their impending relegation, which was confirmed by the draw.
"I thought Sunderland played very well, it was their best performance of the season," he said. "They could relax because they had nothing to protect. In that situation players can be less inhibited and enjoy themselves.
"They only had 11 points before tonight, the worst record in the top division. But they're a young team and they came here relaxed, and came to enjoy themselves.
"Maybe they'll never play here again, and that was a big incentive for them.
"We didn't expect it obviously. But you have to accept it can happen. I don't think we were poor tonight, some of the football was fantastic at times."
United were constantly repelled by Black Cats' keeper Kelvin Davis and their own wasteful finishing, a point that was not lost on Sir Alex.
"We got a bit anxious towards the end, which is natural," he admitted. "We tried to hammer the square peg into the round hole and we forced the situation as best we could."
United go to White Hart Lane on Monday to face Tottenham, and Ferguson is aware that another tough 90 minutes lies in wait for his side.
"It'll be a tough game on Monday," he said. "It's a terrific football pitch and great atmosphere. We've had some great games with Tottenham in the past, we have a great record there and hopefully we'll come back with the three points."
Sir Alex also confirmed that Louis Saha should be available for the trip to North London.
