Scolari considers England optionsPortugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has confirmed he has had talks with the Football Association about replacing Sven-Goran Eriksson as England coach.
Scolari says it was an "informal" chat with the Portuguese FA's consent but insists a deal is far from finalised.
"The coach has still not been chosen," Scolari told the website of Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias.
"There are four or five names and in seven or 15 days it will be settled. My situation with Portugal is the same."
BBC Radio Five Live understands no contract has been signed but talks between Scolari and FA chief executive Brian Barwick in Lisbon on Wednesday went well.
It is believed the two men have an agreement in principle for Scolari to take the job but details have yet to be finalised.
The 57-year-old's contract with Portugal expires on 31 July and he has a gentleman's agreement not to commit himself to another job until his current deal runs out.
But it is understood part of the FA's talks in Lisbon were about waiving this arrangement.
BBC Radio Five Live's Arlo White, currently in Lisbon, obtained a recording of an interview a Portuguese journalist did with Scolari on Thursday.
The Brazilian told the journalist: "An agreement is a very different thing to having a meeting. I can meet a person on a dance floor.
"It is absurd to think like this. I am a professional and I am going to respect my contract until 31 July, this is the agreement I have and what I am going to do.
"Talk is one thing, managing training sessions is another. It is a very different subject."
Scolari continued on Diario de Noticias that he had to think over his options with his contract expiring soon and had had a host of offers already.
"It was a simple talk, informal and with the consent of the Portuguese Football Federation, and up until 31 July no-one knows what is going to happen," he said.
"The FA is checking out names and one of them is mine. I have to be happy with being remembered. But I don't have an agreement except with Portugal.
"The job, the work situation, technical conditions were talked about.
"But I don't have just this offer. I've got other teams, national sides and clubs. That's the life of a professional. I always honour my contracts.
"I've already had proposals from Real Madrid and Barcelona that I said no to, and that I'd only talk after the end of the contract. No one is guaranteeing that I'll stay in Portugal.
"And you ask, what if we lost in the first round of the World Cup? Would there be anyone that would like it if I stayed in Portugal? No.
"I must listen to all proposals because my contract finishes in July and it is normal for a manager to do this."
On Thursday at a dinner with Portuguese football federation officials, Scolari was quoted as saying Barwick had offered him the chance to manage England for seven years.
"He laid out contracts for five and seven years on the table," Scolari was reported as telling The Times.
"The official said, 'We should speak English'. I said 'Speak what you want.'
"I didn't speak Arabian in Arabia, but I am learning English."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/4953540.stm Luiz Felipe Scolari has sensationally withdrawn his interest in becoming England's next coach.
The current Portugal national team boss announced his decision at a press conference in Germany, where he was expected to provide an update on the England situation.
But while the expectation was for the Brazilian to either confirm, or deny, if he had already agreed to replace Sven Goran Eriksson, Scolari declared he no longer wanted the job.
Scolari has claimed the huge interest over the past 24 hours has prompted him to pull out of the process for succeeding Eriksson after the World Cup.
After The Football Association's chief executive Brian Barwick returned to England on Thursday, following talks with Scolari, there was a mass media scrum outside the Brazilian's house.
He has decided the intrusion into his personal life is not something he wishes to live with and he has stated he will not be England's next coach.
"I will not be the next England coach," affirmed Scolari. "I was one of numerous candidates.
"I will be the Portugal coach until the end of the World Cup. Portugal at this moment cannot cope with a coach negotiating with other federations - they don't really need it at the time being.
"Yesterday I talked with a few friends who helped in my decision. There were 20 reporters in front of my house - that was too much and I didn't like it all.
"I don't like this pressure so I will definitely not be coach of England.
"I have been in talks with the English FA and I want to thank the Portuguese Federation president (Gilberto Madail) for giving me the chance to talk to them.
"I am not and will not be the England coach, but I am happy the English federation (FA) remembered my name and I expect them to name the new coach in the days to come.
"It was an interesting offer with several interesting options and I really thought about it for a long time."
Scolari's decision has placed The FA back at square one in their hunt for a successor to Eriksson.
The Swede is leaving after the World Cup finals and many within the game had been aghast at the possibility of a second consecutive foreign appointment.
The FA are now likely to look closer to home for Eriksson's replacement, with Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren previously the favourite.
Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce and Charlton Athletic chief Alan Curbishley have also been under consideration, along with former Northern Ireland international Martin O'Neill.
Following Scolari's statement, The FA confirmed they will now consider their position regarding the appointment of the next England coach.
"It is no secret that Mr Scolari is one of the candidates that The FA has spoken to as part of the recruitment process," said The FA in a statement.
"We will now reflect on his announcement before making any further comment as we move forward with the process."
