Have just posted on a Newcastle site asking if anyone had heard anythin' ..... one guy had heard the same rumour , another hadn't ..... and both said there had been nothin' on it either in the local North East or national press (or media) that they were aware of , another fan said he couldn't see where Barton could fit into their side ....... so for now , this remains just a rumour !!
A twist to the tale could come in the words of another Geordie fan who claimed he knew a reliable source that suggested Newcastle were at the 'advanced stages' of talks with TWO players ..... one of whom is playin' in the premiership ..... an' the deal could be concluded by the end of the week!!

Man City snap up striker Dickov
Manchester City have signed Paul Dickov on a two-year contract after the 33-year-old was released by Blackburn.
Dickov was at City between August 1996 and February 2002 and found the lure of returning to the club too good an offer to turn down.
"Blackburn offered me a great deal to stay - two years - and they were going into Europe," the ex-Scotland international told City's website.
"But I just felt the chance of coming back here was too big a pull for me."
He added: "It's fantastic for me. I never wanted to leave in the first place.
"I've a great love for this club, and I know players often say that and people may question that, but I genuinely have a big affection for Manchester City.
"I support the club myself, my kids are Junior Blues and it's a massive thing for me to come back. I can't stop smiling about it."

Everton have agreed a £8.5 million fee for Andy Johnson.
fr:skysports.com--The England hit-man looks all but certain to be on his way out of Selhurst Park in the close-season, with Everton now vying with Wigan and Bolton for his signature.Wigan and Bolton have had £8.5 million offers accepted by Palace chairman Simon Jordan, who accepts the fee offered is a fair price.Johnson, who is on standby for England's World Cup squad, will now talk with all the interested parties before making a decision with regards his future.
The player engaged in discussions with Wigan on Friday, and will do likewise with Bolton and Everton, if as expected, their bid is accepted.Palace have yet to confirm whether they have accepted Everton's bid but The Toffees have issued a statement claiming that an accord has been struck.
"Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and his Crystal Palace counterpart Simon Jordan have reached agreement for the possible transfer of the England international striker Andrew Johnson," read a statement on the club's official website.
It is expected that Johnson and Everton will discuss a potential deal on Saturday.
As yet, the freescoring front-man, who has experience of The Premiership with Palace, has not intimated as to which club holds any early advantage.

Tottenham part company with Mido
Tottenham's striker Mido will leave the club and return to Roma at the end of his 18-month loan spell.
The Egyptian international, 23, was hampered by groin and knee injuries in the latter stages of the season after an impressive start at White Hart Lane.
Mido made 28 starts in total for Tottenham, scoring 14 goals.
Tottenham have also decided to release Serbia and Montenegro full-back Goran Bunjevcevic and Morocco defender Noureddine Naybet.
Mido, though, is the biggest name exit.
He had been expected to leave after the recent signing of Dimitar Berbatov.
