First-choice Isaksson out of Swede's first match

STOCKHOLM, June 8 (Reuters) - First choice goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson has been ruled out of Sweden's opening group match against Trinidad & Tobago, the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter reported on Thursday.


The Stade Rennes keeper suffered concussion during training on Wednesday when a shot from midfielder Kim Kallstrom him in the face.


Isaksson will be replaced in Saturday's match by Rami Shaaban or John Alvbage.

Mexico keeper returns home after father's death

GOETTINGEN, Germany, June 8 (Reuters) - Mexico's first-choice keeper Oswaldo Sanchez has returned home from the World Cup after the death of his father who was due to to watch him play in the finals, the Mexican football association said.

"We received the call late yesterday and he has left for Mexico." Juan Jose Kochen told Reuters on Thursday. "We are all shocked and our thoughts are with him."


Kochen said his association was in contact with World Cup organisers, FIFA.

Mexican officials were expected to make a statement later in the day about whether Sanchez would return to Germany or they would call up a replacement for him.

Sanchez's father, Felipe, who was in his mid 50s, suffered a heart attack, according to media reports in Mexico. He was due to fly to Germany.

England scare as Gerrard rates his chances as '50-50'

fr:soccernet.com--Steven Gerrard has given England a fitness scare ahead of the World Cup opener with Paraguay in Frankfurt on Saturday and rates his chances of playing as '50-50'.

The Liverpool midfielder is battling to overcome a knock on his hip which caused him to go into back spasms during training earlier in the week.

Gerrard took some part in Thursday's session in Germany but is hedging his bets as to whether he will available to play in 48 hours' time.

He said: 'It is not a back problem. I got a knock on my hip which made my back go into spasms.

'The good thing is it is improving all the time. I have got a good chance of playing on Saturday but I need to keep working on it from now until Saturday.

'What is a good chance? As we speak now, I am probably 50-50 to play - but if it keeps improving as it has done over the last 24 hours, then I'll be there.'

Gerrard, who missed the last World Cup after undergoing groin surgery, added: 'I've not had a back problem for years. This has come from the knock.

'I don't know how it is going to respond but it has improved a lot over the last 24 hours. If it keeps going in that direction, I am confident I will be ready for Saturday.'

MUNICH: FIFA has complied with Saudi Arabia’s request to replace injured striker Mohamed Al Anbar.

Though the replacement player has not been named www.the-afc.com has reliably learnt that 19-year-old Al Ahli defender Mohamed Eid Al Bishi, who is already in Germany, could take his place.

Al Anbar suffered an ankle injury a day before the opening match against Tunisia which ended in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

Member associations are allowed to replace injured or sick players up to twenty-four hours prior to the team's opening match provided that their medical condition has been ratified by the FIFA Sports Medical Committee.
