Man Utd make £10m bid for CarrickManchester United have had a £10m bid for midfielder Michael Carrick rejected by Tottenham, BBC Sport can reveal.
Spurs dismissed the offer, insisting United would have to double their offer to land the 24-year-old, who is part of the England squad at the World Cup.
Manchester United faxed their offer to Tottenham on Friday, but it was swiftly turned down.
Carrick's agent, David Giess, declined to comment when contacted by BBC Sport late on Friday.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants Carrick as a replacement for Roy Keane who left the club last December.
Carrick, who has two years left on his contract at White Hart Lane, is likely to be on the substitute's bench for England in their World Cup opener against Paraguay on Saturday.

Manchester United will have to pay more than the £7m they have offered Tottenham Hotspur for Michael Carrick after the White Hart Lane club put a valuation on the player of £13m. Talks between the two sides are expected to conclude next week with the transfer of the player.
It has been an eventful week for Carrick, 24, with the doubts over Steven Gerrard meaning that he has had to prepare himself for the possibility of being thrust into the England team today as well as contemplating the prospect of being Roy Keane's replacement. The midfielder has been kept up to date with the transfer saga in London and could change teams during the tournament.
Carrick will be allowed to leave Tottenham with some reluctance, they hoped to keep their best player this season, but with two years left on his contract, Carrick was in a strong position. Having refused the best offer that the club could make him, it became clear at White Hart Lane that they would have to cash in on the player.
Ferguson was close to moving for Carrick in December and yesterday The Independent revealed that Tottenham were at last ready to sell him for the right price having identified Didier Zokora of St Etienne as a replacement. Although Carrick signed a four-year deal in August 2004, his rise in status meant that he was due an improvement in his wages in the summer.
Tottenham have strong links with St Etienne through sporting director Damien Comolli which should allow them to move to the front of the queue of the suitors approaching the Ivory Coast international. They are likely to secure an agreement from United that they will not approach Zokora. United could yet move for the Lyons midfielder Mahamadou Diarra although not at the quoted price of around £14m.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is celebrating the dramatic capture of Michael Carrick after reaching agreement with Tottenham in a deal worth £14 million.
MICHAEL CARRICK Following high level talks between Old Trafford chief executive David Gill and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy over the last few days, Tottenham are believed to have accepted United's offer for the talented 24-year-old star.
Carrick is currently in Germany as part of Sven Goran Eriksson's England squad and he will join his new United team-mates for pre-season training once a medical and the final negotiations of his package have been finalised.
The move represents a stunning coup for Ferguson who has been scouring the world for a top class young midfielder following the departure of Roy Keane last season.
After checking stars like Deportivo La Caruna's Argentinian Aldo Duscher, fellow countryman Juan Riquelme from Villareal and Lyon's Mamahoud Diarra, Fergie has decided English is best - with Carrick recognised as a burgeoning talent.
Spurs initisally rebuffed United's interest, but with Ferguson adamant the club should push the boat out for Carrick, Gill was given the go-ahead by Florida based owners the Glazers to make Tottenham an offer they couldn't refuse.
That hit £14 million - and Spurs are believed to have said yes to United enabling White Hart Lane boss Martin Jol to recruit a top class replacement.
Carrick came through the West Ham youth academy and starred in the club's FA Youth Cup success in 2000. He made his debut for England against Mexico in 2001 but injuries hampered his progress at international and club level before he sealed a £2.75million transfer to Spurs two years ago. Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly rejected a £10 million offer for Michael Carrick from Manchester United.
Carrick, currently on World Cup duty with England, has been pinpointed by Sir Alex Ferguson as a midfield reinforcement for next season.
Ferguson is seeking a long-term replacement for Roy Keane and has identified Carrick as a candidate to fill in for his former skipper.
But Spurs gave The Red Devils' bid short shrift and have reportedly told their Premiership rivals that Carrick would cost £20 million.
It has been claimed that United faxed their offer to Tottenham on Friday and it is unclear if The Red Devils will now up the ante.
With Spurs planning for a return to European competition next season, they are unlikely to be in the mood to part with Carrick.
The ex-West Ham United midfielder was an influential figure during the North London club's push for UEFA Champions League football.
