Scolari not interested in a beautiful game
fr:soccernet.com--Luiz Felipe Scolari insisted winning was the only thing which mattered at the World Cup ahead of Portugal's quarter-final encounter against England.The Portugal coach refused to jump on the bandwagon, driven by FIFA president Sepp Blatter, which has criticised England for playing negative football in Germany.
Scolari said: 'I am a coach who likes to have results. I cannot say I want to play beautiful football.
'What I want is results. England have got results in this tournament and so have Portugal. A lot of the people who have played beautiful football are at home now.'
Scolari admitted Portugal will miss Deco and Costinha, who are suspended following their red cards against Holland in the last 16.
Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo is also a doubtful starter after missing the last two days of training as he tried to recover from the thigh injury he suffered in the stormy match with the Dutch.
Scolari added: 'Costinha and Deco are special players but all the players I have here are special and the players who are going to play in their places are special to the Portuguese people too, so we trust them a lot.'
They are likely to be Simao Sabrosa and Armando Petit.
Scolari is not expecting a stormy match such as Portugal's tie against Holland, which resulted in 16 yellow and four red cards.
He said: 'I hope against England it is going to be a fair match. If one team is tougher than the other, they must be punished for it.'
Most of all, he admitted guiding Portugal to their first World Cup semi-final would fill him with pride.
He said: 'If we go through, it will be one of the three biggest achievements in my career (Along with the World Cup win with Brazil and reaching the Euro 2004 final with Portugal). I am going to tell the players to enjoy playing against a nice team like England.
'To enjoy being in the eight best teams in the world. To enjoy the quarter-final and have fun and pleasure with it. That is the main thing.'
Carrick the key for Jose
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believes that Michael Carrick should be retained in the midfield holding role for England's World Cup quarter-final against Portugal.Spurs star Carrick is expected to drop to the bench after impressing against Ecuador, with Owen Hargreaves taking his place and Gary Neville returning at right-back.
However, Mourinho feels that Carrick would be a big asset for Sven-Goran Eriksson's side against Portugal.
He told the Daily Telegraph: "England are much more compact and solid with Michael Carrick and this, in my opinion, is the way to play in difficult matches.
"Without Carrick, (Frank) Lampard and (Steven) Gerrard have too much responsibility in the building of the first phase.
"So they are losing the possibility to get into areas where they have greater freedom, areas where they can kill the opposition in the last 25 metres of the pitch.
"Carrick is now the link, but I believe he needs more personality.
"He must feel he has the status and responsibility he has on the pitch at Tottenham, where he is king of the first phase, so he can give Lampard and Gerrard the freedom."
