David Beckham + van Nistelrooy =>Newcastle ?
Friday morning's papers carried stories of an apparent meeting between Newcastle Chairman Freddy Shepherd and Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham.The 31 year-old former England captain (and his wife) are reputed to have been sounded out about a move to Tyneside when their paths crossed at Claridge's Hotel in London on Wednesday.
Beckham has less than a year remaining on his Madrid deal and it's claimed that no moves towards an extension have been made.
With a new President on board at the Bernabeu and Fabio Capello en route from Juventus to take charge, Beckham's future in Spain has been the source of some conjecture in recent days.

And it is said Shepherd has told Beckham he would be given the Magpies No 7 shirt once worn by Kevin Keegan plus a financial package that would see him take home £120,000 a week plus image rights that would earn a percentage of shirt sales.
But a statement on the club's website read: "Newcastle United never comments on transfer speculation.
"The club has always enjoyed a close relationship with Real Madrid and would never do anything to spoil that relationship."
Real Madrid are keen to keep the former Manchester United midfielder, who resigned as England skipper in the wake of their World Cup exit, but Michael Owen's injury agony has made Shepherd determined to recruit a new hero for the 'Toon Army'.
New Real boss Fabio Capello on Thursday said: "There's no Beckham problem. He is important for Real Madrid."
Cynics will no doubt mock the idea of Newcastle signing Beckham but he could find the lure of a return to England too much to turn down and Shepherd has form for pulling off high-profile coups having signed Owen from Real just last summer. 盧基

Toon cool on Becks deal
Newcastle United today distanced themselves from talk that David Beckham is about to become their first major summer signing.
Beckham was in London yesterday and said to be in discussions with United over a possible move from Spain's La Liga with Real Madrid, but Toon officials have remained tight-lipped on the situation.
True, United have built up a rapport with the Spanish giants over the last few seasons, with Michael Owen arriving last summer from Real to break the club's transfer record and Jonathan Woodgate heading in the other direction in 2004.
But although United did not rule out the arrival of the recently-retired England skipper, who stepped down on Sunday as captain after a disappointing World Cup, speculation that Becks is on his way to Toon appears premature.
A club spokesman said today: "We never comment on speculation.
"The club has always enjoyed a close relationship with Real Madrid and we would never do anything to spoil that."
United chairman Freddy Shepherd, who today jetted out to Germany for Sunday's World Cup final, was snapped by Paparazzi at the top London hotel Claridges yesterday, but so was Victoria Beckham, which has fuelled talk that United are in meetings to make a sensational move to bring the Real Madrid star to Tyneside.
The 31-year-old Beckham is thought to be facing an uncertain future in Madrid following the arrival of new president Ramon Calderon and boss Fabio Capello.
United are yet to make their first dip into the transfer market this summer, but a look at history says an audacious bid cannot be ruled out.
Only last year United shook the world of football when they prised Michael Owen from Madrid for £17m, and before the injured England star names like Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan arriving.
Yet a move for Beckham has come right out of the blue, with manager Glenn Roeder's main priority a striker this summer - and work to capture a high profile forward thought to be well under way by the United boss, who has so far worked minor miracles at St James' Park.

But according to The Daily Mail, the Toon definitely have Beckham at the top of their shopping list and refused to deny a meeting had taken place.
And the paper says part of Shepherd's sales pitch to Beckham is that he also wants to bring van Nistelrooy to the North East.
Van Nistelrooy is out of favour at Old Trafford after spending most of the second half of last season on the bench with Louis Saha and even Giuseppe Rossi preferred to him in attack.
But he would be the perfect replacement at St James' Park for the injured Michael Owen and the retired Alan Shearer.
With Owen possibly out for the whole of next season with that terrible knee injury suffered against Sweden, Glenn Roeder's men are desperate to land a big-name striker.
The Toon's move for Beckham could also be helped by the fact that their £9million buy Albert Luque is still highly rated in the Spanish capital, and could form part of a deal.
