Ashton tussle coming to a headNewcastle are pushing ahead in their attempts to sign Dean Ashton, despite West Ham insisting the striker is worth at least £10million.
The Magpies are searching for a like-for-like replacement for legend Alan Shearer and have identified Ashton as an ideal successor.
The 22-year-old scored six goals in 16 games for the Hammers last season after moving for £7.25million from Norwich in January.
Alan Pardew is determined to hang onto his target man but Newcastle are continuing to put pressure on the Hammers to sell.
With the services of Damien Duff already secured, Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd means business in the transfer market and is prepared to push the boat out to get Glenn Roeder's first-choice frontman.

Glenn Roeder fears the lack of UEFA Champions League football would hinder any Newcastle United bid for Miroslav
Klose.
The Magpies are desperately scouring the continent for a new striker, following Alan Shearer's retirement and the lengthy injury to Michael Owen.
Roeder has been linked with a string of options from West Ham United powerhouse Dean Ashton to Feyenoord hit-man Dirk Kuyt.
Werder Bremen ace Klose, who has also been linked with Manchester United, has been nominated as a target for Newcastle.
Magpies boss Roeder is a huge fan of the World Cup's top scorer, but hinted a deal for the Germany international may struggle to get off the ground.
"Miroslav Klose is a top-drawer player and I think I'll say what the chairman says, that I'm not ruling anyone in or anyone out," said Roeder.
"Klose could possibly be looking for a Champions League club after winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup and we perhaps don't fit his remit, if he were to move.
"But you can't help but admire his ability."
Newcastle have tied up the signing of Irish winger Damien Duff from Chelsea and can offer the prospect of European football to their other targets.
The 3-0 Intertoto Cup victory over Lillestrom at the weekend earned The Magpies a spot in the second qualifying round of the Uefa Cup. 華麗:icon124:
