SYDNEY, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Australia coach Graham Arnold named a 22-man training squad on Wednesday as he continues preparations for the Socceroos' opening 2007 Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait this month.Arnold only selected players with clubs in Australia's A-League who are likely to form the basis of the team to face Kuwait on Aug. 16 in Sydney.
'We have picked a blend of talented young players and some experienced players that will help the youth develop,' Arnold said in a Football Federation Australia statement.
'We can't afford to take Kuwait lightly. I've studied videos of them in action, spoken to other coaches about them and they are a well organised team.'
After next week's camp Arnold is due to name an 18-man squad for the Kuwait game, with few of Australia's top players likely to return from their European clubs.
'It's a very difficult situation with the AFC's decision that the match will be played on a Wednesday,' said FFA head of high performance John Boultbee. 'It does not take into account the situation of nations like Australia who have key players employed in Europe.'
The training squad includes three players, Stan Lazaridis, Mark Milligan and Archie Thompson, who were part of the Socceroos squad which reached the second round of the World Cup in Germany this year.
