Sources close to the midlands club are indicating the unsettled Bulgaria captain is set to renew his partnership with former Hoops manager O'Neill, although the Northern Irishman still refuses to make any official comment about the player.
Petrov is currently preparing for the European Championship qualifiers with Romania and Slovenia but that is unlikely to prevent any deal finally being struck.
The 27-year-old has been O'Neill's number one target since he was appointed as David O'Leary's successor three-and-a-half weeks ago.
Petrov was a key figure for O'Neill in his successful time at Parkhead, whom he guided to three SPL titles and the UEFA Cup final and wrestled dominance north of the border away from Rangers.
But Petrov handed in a transfer request by the end of last season despite signing a new contract in January and is keen to play in the Premiership.
Portsmouth have also been keen on signing Petrov but their manager Harry Redknapp claimed on Monday: 'I think you will find Petrov has gone to Aston Villa. That is the plan.'
O'Neill is aware of the need to strengthen one of the smallest squads in the Premiership and has been holding talks with Aston Villa's new majority shareholder Randy Lerner.
In an ideal world O'Neill would like to bring in more than just Petrov in the next 72 hours.
But he has made it clear he will not sign players long term just for the sake of it and admitted he may look for loan captures to supplement his squad before undertaking more spending in January and next summer. Aston Villa to clinch Petrov deal

And Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp told BBC Radio Five Live: "I think you will find Petrov has gone to Villa. That's the plan and we wish him all the best."
Pompey have made repeated offers for the Bulgarian but the 27-year-old is to be reunited with his former boss.
O'Neill has made a promising start to his career at Villa Park and has been given the go-ahead to strengthen his squad by new owner Randy Lerner.
Celtic boss Gordon Strachan confirmed talks had taken place with his predecessor more than a week ago about Petrov - but claimed that the player would not be moving to Villa.
However, Petrov was not included in Saturday's squad for the 2-1 win over Hibernian and did not feature at Inverness the week before.
Petrov, who is preparing for Euro 2008 qualifiers against Romania and Slovenia, is contracted to the Scottish champions until 2010 but submitted a transfer request at the end of last season.
The transfer window closes on 31 August and, now that O'Neill has the confirmed financial backing of American tycoon Lerner, Villa have been able to meet Celtic's asking price.
And Celtic appear to have lined up Danish international Thomas Gravesen as a replacement for Petrov.

Aston Villa are close to agreeing a transfer fee of £6m with Celtic for midfielder Stilian Petrov.
The 27-year-old is currently away on international duty with Bulgaria but it is understood his representatives have held talks with Villa.
New Villa manager Martin O'Neill was in charge of Petrov during his five-year reign at Celtic Park.
Former Celtic defender Didier Agathe has been training with Villa this week and could be offered a short-term deal.
Agathe, who had a trial with Blackburn earlier in the summer, also played under O'Neill at Celtic.
Petrov joined Celtic in July 1999 from CSKA Sofia and has made more than 250 appearances for the club.

No deal as Gravesen exits GlasgowReal Madrid midfielder Thomas Gravesen has left Glasgow without a contract being agreed with Celtic amid doubts over the results of his medical.
The Scottish champions appear to have some concerns about the fitness of the 30-year-old, who suffered a knee injury in the 2004/05 season.
But his agent, John Sivebaek, said he hoped a deal could still be done.
It had been thought that personal terms and a £2m transfer fee had been agreed, but Celtic now say "talks are ongoing".
Gravesen had told BBC Sport on Sunday that Celtic and four English Premiership clubs - Newcastle, Bolton, Everton and Middlesbrough - were interested in his signature.
But, after a day of talks, he left Glasgow to join the Denmark international squad without a decision on his future being announced.
Gravesen left Everton for Spain in a £2.5m deal in January 2005 and had been made available for a £2m fee.
The 30-year-old hopes to have a new club before Thursday's transfer deadline and Denmark's opening match of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.
They are due to play an international friendly against Portugal on Friday before they start on the road to Euro 2008 away to Iceland on 6 September.
The Danish squad was to assemble on Sunday, but national coach Morten Olsen gave Gravesen time off to secure a new club.
Former Celtic player Tommy Burns, now head of youth development, believes Gravesen would be a great signing.
"He has got a great pedigree," Burns said.
"He played in the English Premiership and made a big impact there.
"He went to Real Madrid and maybe didn't make so much of an impact there because they obviously have so many top players.
"But I don't think there is any doubt that, if Celtic get him to come here, he would make a huge impact."
