Bryan Robson's 22-month reign at West Brom has ended with the former England captain parting company with the club by 'mutual consent' on Monday morning.
Robson had come under fire from a section of Baggies supporters at the end of Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Southend.
And less than 48 hours later he has left the Hawthorns only seven games into the new campaign following West Brom's relegation from The Premiership in May.
Albion, in a media statement, said: 'The board would like to thank Bryan Robson for his efforts during his 22 months in charge and wishes him well for the future.'
Chairman Jeremy Peace said: 'After much deliberation, and in view of the results since early 2006, it has been decided that a change is necessary if the club is to achieve its aims for this season and beyond.
'This is a very important time for West Bromwich Albion. With promotion a priority, the board felt that, given the club's current league position, the best way forward was to agree to make a change now.'
Nigel Pearson will assume control of first team affairs while the club considers all available options and will be at the helm for Tuesday's Carling Cup clash with Cheltenham.
Peace can point to Albion's appalling record since the 2-0 home win over Blackburn in early February as justification for the change of manager.
That victory moved West Brom six points clear of the relegation zone but it proved to be their last win of the campaign and they collected only four points from the last 13 games to be relegated with two matches remaining.
It was in stark contrast to 12 months earlier when Robson was hailed a hero after helping the Baggies pull off the Great Escape to remain in the top flight.
He kept his job but away defeats at Sunderland and Preston this season had increased the pressure and the home draw with Southend proved to be the last straw.
Robson had returned to The Hawthorns in November 2004 as a replacement for Gary Megson but even then there was a mixed response from supporters to his appointment despite serving the club with great distinction as a player.
Peace is desperate for Albion to return to the Premiership at the first attempt having managed to keep hold of many of the club's top players.
Paul Robinson and Curtis Davies - a target for Arsenal - both signed new contracts while Zolta Gera is still at the club despite expressing a desire to leave.
Failure to regain a place among the elite for 2007-2008 would put the future of these players in doubt and Peace is mindful of acting sooner rather than later to ensure the Baggies have the right man at the helm.
There have been reports that Mick Wadsworth was being lined up to become director of football although there has been no comment from the club.
Robson released his own statement, backing the Baggies for promotion.
He said: 'I've really enjoyed the short time I've been at the Albion. The fans have been different class and I just hope, with the squad of players in place, that they get back up to the Premier League, which I really believe they will do this season.
'I do think there's a really good squad at the club and that it's only a matter of time before they get it right, climb the table and win promotion.
