Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has confirmed he will sign Pavel Srnicek as cover for Shay Given.After initially playing down the significance of the clubless 38-year-old training on Tyneside, Newcastle have turned to their former favourite on a short-term deal.
A similar situation occured with Lee Clark, who is now coaching at St James' Park, and Roeder is quick to point out that the Czech keeper will be capable of stepping into the breach if Steve Harper and Tim Krul are unavailable.
"He's 38 but he really is super-fit," Roeder told Newcastle's official website.
"There is no way anyone can say he is past it.
"And don't forget keepers like David Seaman played until they were 40.
"He was still playing football in Portugal in May and, if we need him, we will all have complete confidence in him."
Given is out of action after a stomach operation.

Pavel Srnicek is close to completing a shock return to Newcastle.
The Czech goalkeeper has been training with his former club for the past week, and has impressed Glenn Roeder sufficiently to be offered a contract until January.
Roeder has been on the lookout for cover following a stomach injury to Shay Given that has pressed Steve Harper into first team action, and was recently linked with a move for Dutchman Ronald Waterreus.
The Magpies manager admits he has been impressed by the physical conditioning of the 38-year-old, who first joined the club from Banik Ostrava in 1991 and went on to make almost 150 league appearances.
"I haven't really come across Pav before but after watching him in training this week I have to say he is in great shape," Roeder told the club's official website.
"We invited him to the game with Everton last Sunday from Italy where he is living at the moment and he made such an impact on us we then asked him to train with us this week.
"He's 38 but he really is superfit and there is no way anyone can say he is past it. And don't forget keepers like David Seaman played until they were 40."
Srnicek left Tyneside in 1998 for a second spell with Banik, and also enjoyed spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth and West Ham, before pitching up at Portuguese side Beira Mar last season.
"I have to say that Pav has looked great in training and by bringing him back until the end of the year it will be great for our team spirit," added Roeder.
"He will be good for our young keeper Tim Krul and they tell me him and Steve Harper got on like a house on fire when the pair of them were here before.
