Packed Camp Nou as world stars turn out for Cruyff

Nearly 100,000 spectators packed the Camp Nou Stadium to watch world soccer stars, including former ace Eric Cantona, turn out for FC Barcelona's long-awaited testimonial to former player and coach, Johan Cruyff. The stadium reverberated with applause as Cruyff addressed the crowd before the game's start with a simple wish that all should have a good time. The game pitted Barcelona's current team, coached by Dutchman Louis Van Gaal -- and boasting Brazilian Rivaldo and the Dutch De Boer twins -- against Cruyff's so-called Barcelona "Dream Team" of the early 1990s, with players such as Dutchman Ronald Koeman, Dane Michael Laudrup and Bulgaria's Hristo Stoichkov who were joined by a selection of guest players in the second half. Several invited players such as Brazilian Romario and FIFA Player of the Year for 1998, Zinedine Zidane proved unable to make the date in the end. Dutch centerforward Patrick Kluivert started the scoring with a goal for Van Gaal's side a minute before the break while Brazilian Giovanni sealed the 2-0 victory with a 67th minute shot. Cruyff, who was also a star player and coach for Ajax of Amsterdam, secured himself legendary status at the Spanish club in the early 1990s when he led the side to four consecutive Spanish league titles from 1991 to 1994 and its first and only European Champions Cup in 1992. His decline began in 1994 when Barcelona was trounced 4-0 by AC Milan in the Champions Cup final in Athens. Increasingly bitter relations between him and club chairman Jose Lluis Nunez then led to his sacking in 1996. Since then, Cruyff has been battling for the club to fulfill a contract clause entitling him to a testimonial game at the hallowed stadium. 'I was very moved and just about able contain myself and not cry," Cruyff, 51, said afterwards.
"The celebration was for a team that everyone here loved and people came to say goodbye to some great players." Asked if he would like to return to coach Barcelona, Cruyff said simply : "The management and I don't get along so it would be very difficult." Evidence of how raw ties still are between Cruyff and Nunez was Barcelona's refusal to allow Cruyff's players on Wednesday use the club logo on their jerseys. But Cruyff's lasting popularity was also in evidence this week as the 98,000 tickets to the game were reported to have sold out in record time. And although there was no shaking of hands prior to the game, Nunez was seen to applaud as Cruyff addressed the crowd. Adding spice to the game was the fact that Cruyff has joined many Barcelona fans over the last year in slamming coach Van Gaal for allegedly ruining the club's tradition of nurturing young local players and instead importing a glut of Dutch stars. Van Gaal, took the bench to coach his side Wednesday but there was no shaking of hands between him and Cruyff.
