Giggs and Saha back in the squad
Giggs and Saha back in the squadUnited's team news for Saturday's trip to Wigan suggests the Reds could be at full strength for the following weekend against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Ryan Giggs is back in the squad and could play some part against Wigan, though a return against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday in the Champions League seems more likely.
The Welshman, who hasn't played since injuring his hamstring in the 3-2 win over Celtic on September 13, has been sorely missed. Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Ryan has trained the last few days. It may be a bit early. With the game on Tuesday there is more focus on that. He will certainly travel with us on Saturday and it's good to have him back."
Louis Saha has shaken off the hamstring and groin problems that troubled him before the international break. He returned from international duty without a hitch and will challenge Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - United's two-goal hero in the last game against Newcastle - for a place in the starting line-up. However, Cristiano Ronaldo did return to Carrington with a knock on his ankle, but the manager is still hopeful the in-form 21-year-old winger will recover.
"Ronaldo got an ankle knock, he is getting treatment today (Friday). He stayed on for Portugal with the injury, which created a bit of swelling. It's not serious, but we need to give him every chance of playing against Wigan."
Gabriel Heinze, who has been suffering from a hamstring strain, definitely misses the trip to the JJB Stadium. And, although he has a slim chance of being ready for the Copenhagen game, the Argentine left-back is more likely to be available for the Liverpool clash.
"Gaby may have a chance of making Tuesday's game, but he'll certainly be back for Liverpool on Sunday," added Sir Alex. "It wasn't an outright tear of the hamstring, it's enough to make him miss Argentina's friendly with Spain on Wednesday and it rules him out for us at Wigan."
The Reds boss is keen for his team not to suffer a post-international glitch, and is urging his side to continue where they left off against Newcastle, where United ran out confident 2-0 winners.
"We are top of the league and we want to stay there," he said. "We were superb against Newcastle and we want to continue that."
Rooney told to ignore critics
Sir Alex Ferguson has told Wayne Rooney to ignore the debate about his recent form and concentrate on building up his match fitness.Rooney has completed 90 minutes on only five occasions since mid-April. Sir Alex says players need an absolute minimum of five games to build up match fitness, but those matches have been sporadic and interrupted due to suspension.
"You can train all you like, but to get the timing and tempo of your game right, the only way to do is to play games," he said at his Friday press conference. "I'm more than confident he will get that very, very soon."
The recent analysis of Rooney’s displays is, according to Sir Alex, perfect fodder for the tabloid press.
"I know, and deep down every defender in the country knows, the lad will come to life, I have no fears about that at all," he said. "All he needs is games. And he needs to focus on what we are telling him because young players can sometimes start to believe what other people are saying or writing about them, which can be very disruptive.
"As I have said many times, whether it is good or bad, Wayne is the number one seller in this country now," he added. "We are discussing a 20-year-old boy and people are hoping I will say this is the end of him. But there is no problem for me. I know his heart is in the right place, the desire is there, the attitude is good. Why should we create problems for ourselves when all we need is patience?”
The United boss harbours no concerns about Rooney’s form, and it is quite prepared to give the talented forward the time he needs to build his match sharpness and regain the kind of form that has elevated his status in world football to that of a player beyond his years.
"Wayne is intelligent enough to understand the mechanics of the business,” he continued. "Sometimes, things can come too quickly and it has been a bit of a roller-coaster for him in the two years since he joined us.
"Although he had played for England at that stage, he was just showing the glimmer of potentially being a great star. But, on a lot of occasions since, he has carried the mantle for us, which is exceptional for a player of such a young age."
Sir Alex also denied that off-field commercial and sponsorship commitments could be affecting Rooney, insisting that aspect of Wayne’s life is closely followed.
“We pay close scrutiny to what Wayne does on the commercial side and we are not worried about it at all," he said. "Apart from the odd event in London or abroad, everything he does takes place in Manchester." 0:1,0:2啦~
