He had been on the Spurs' radar screen all summer, but was taken by the Portland Blazers with the first pick in the second round, moved to Memphis and then traded to the Pacers for the rights to Alexander Johnson, who figures to have a big role for the Grizzlies.
There were also some future second-round draft picks given up for White.
Now he may end up in San Antonio. At least that's what insiders and his former coach are saying.
An emotional Rick Carlisle could barely say the words when he told reporters Monday that his Indiana Pacers had cut White.
The 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Cincinnati averaged 3.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in eight preseason games.
A world class athlete, White could have been a track and field star had he chosen not to play basketball. He was listed as one of the best leapers in the 2006 draft, "with an incredible vertical leap that will surely secure him a spot in next year’s dunk contest."
The Pacers coach said it was the most difficult cut he's been involved with in his coaching career, but he agreed with the decision because the remaining players are ready to help Indiana win now.
"It was obviously an agonizing decision," Carlisle said. "It had to be made. The good news is we feel like we have some very good players here. The bad news is, you hate to let a guy like James White go who has a lot of promise, who's going to be a good player."
