Ekström on track for title after Zandvoort victory
Mattias Ekström (Audi) triumphed in the thrilling eighth race of the DTM season in Zandvoort and extended his lead in the overall standings even further. Team mate Martin Tomczyk came second in the duel of the dunes, ahead of local hero Christijan Albers in an AMG-Mercedes C-class. Gary Paffett, like Albers Ekström’s fiercest rival in the battle for the championship title, came fourth on the 4.307-kilometre-long course. Manuel Reuter was the best Opel driver, crossing the finish line in his Vectra GTS V8 in eighth.
Peter Dumbreck’s horrific accident triggered some tense moments. The Scot rammed his Vectra GTS V8 hard into the crash barrier in the corner before the finish in the 24th lap and flipped over several times, causing the race to be halted. Dumbreck, who was shortly afterwards standing next to his car, was as a precaution taken to the medical centre for a check up. Following a lengthy break and the restart, the remaining 10 laps were completed as a sprint.
