Imran the man in VB victory says Vanli
Wednesday, 17 March 2010 20:48
Male: Coach Can Vanli hailed goalkeeper Mohamed Imran as his match winner after the Maldives side stunned last season's AFC Cup semi-finalists South China at the National Stadium.
Ali Afshaq scored the only goal of the game after 26 minutes when he took advantage of an error by keeper Ho Kwok Cheun to secure their second consecutive Group G victory.
But Imran produced two excellent second-half saves to deny Kwok Pin Gong and Chan Siu Ki as the hosts gained revenge for last year's defeat in the same fixture.
“Imran won the match for us, he guaranteed that we won the game,” said Vanli.
“He was the one who sealed the result for us today. He kept the ball out in some unbelievable positions. He was the best player.”
The result means VB now top the table having already won 3-2 at Persiwa Wamena but Vanli refused to get too carried away by his side's impressive start.
“Look, I am realistic, we have won two matches, we must keep our feet on the ground,” he added.
“The players might think they are world champions but now my job is to bring the players back to Earth.
“What’s the use of this win if we slip up in our next match? But we will not lose the next match. We will improve our game.
“South China is a very strong team. We had luck and we got it from hard work. If we did not work hard, we would not have had the luck.
“But the team from Hong Kong is very strong. They have great players and are very dangerous. They were very dangerous in the first five minutes.
“I am not 100% happy because we made many mistakes but we can work with the mistakes. We will educate the players tactically.”
South China coach Kim Pan-gon, on the other hand, was left to rue his side's profligacy in a game they largely dominated.
“I am really disappointed,” admitted the Korean.
“Disappointed that we had many chances to score but we could not utilize those chances. We also made a huge mistake to give away the goal. So I am very disappointed by the result.
“The situation is difficult now but we have four games left and if we win all the remaining games, we may have a chance. Even if we win three games, we will still have chance”
Kim also conceded the absence of talismanic striker Tales Schutz affected his side.
“We missed him today,” the 40-year-old Hong Kong national team coach said of the injured Brazilian forward.
“If we had Schutz, we would have been better but I would not say we lost the game because he was not there. Strikers got chances to score and they couldn’t.”
