Genoa sign Thiago Motta Sunday 14 September, 2008

Genoa have officially snapped up out of contract Brazilian midfielder Thiago Motta, it was announced this evening.
The player was a free agent after quitting Atletico Madrid in June and had been linked with a number of top sides, including Juventus and Milan.
He has been troubled by injury worries over the last four years, ending a promising spell at Barcelona, but passed every medical test demanded by Genoa.
Motta has signed a four-year contract with Genoa and the announcement was given after the 2-0 victory over Milan at Marassi.
The Rossoblu have had an eventful summer, reinforcing their squad with Real Zaragoza hitman Diego Milito, former Juventus figure Ruben Olivera, ex-Roma defender Matteo Ferrari, Raffaele Palladino from Juve, Palermo’s Bosko Jankovic, Giandomenico Mesto from Udinese and Parma’s Andrea Gasbarroni.
JUVENTUS
Buffon: 6 – Barely had a save to make all game, but his positioning, alertness and organisation was good as usual.
Grygera: 6.5 – Sound performance from Grygera, who helped keep Di Natale quiet. Missed a good chance on 65 minutes though.
Chiellini: 7 – Returning following a spell on the sidelines, and how much stronger Juve look with him in the team. Had Quagliarella in his pocket all night.
Mellberg: 6 – A sound display by Mellberg generally, but he made a big error at the end when Floro Flores raced through, which could have proved costly. Needs to cut out the mistakes.

De Ceglie: 7 – Came in for the much-criticised Molinaro, and many would say he should keep his place. Certainly has the potential to be the future left back of the Azzurri.

Camoranesi: 8 – Outstanding as he almost always is in a Juve shirt these days. Created numerous chances for his team-mates, and started the move for Amauri's goal.

Poulsen: 7 – Formed a really solid partnership with Sissoko. A better footballer than often given credit for, Poulsen rattled the crossbar with a thunderous long-shot.
Sissoko: 8 – A colossus in the middle-of-the-park. Sissoko made the highly talented Inler look very ordinary. All-action performance from Sissoko, who was also involved in the goal.
Nedved: 6.5 – A busy performance from Nedved, who belied his years tonight with his non-stop running. Still some gas left in the tank of the 36-year-old.
Iaquinta: 6 – A real workhorse up-front - just how Iaquinta failed to score tonight is a mystery. Had one effort disallowed, headed inches wide, and squandered countless decent chances.
Amauri: 7 – Can be frustrating at times, but Amauri was the difference between the sides with his well-taken goal. Also hit the post in the first half with his header.

UDINESE
Handanovic: 7 – Made a string of saves to keep Udinese in the game, and was very brave at times too. Could do nothing on Amauri's winner.
Ferronetti: 6 – A valiant display from Ferronetti, but he was caused problems at times by Iaquinta and Amauri's strength.
Coda: 7 – Udinese's standout defender. Coda made a crucial challenge to stop Iaquinta scoring in the first half, and he also prevented a possible goal with a block on Chiellini's header.
Lukovic: 6 – Stood firm with Coda and Ferronetti for 67 minutes, but eventually couldn't hold out for the entire game as Amauri found a way through.
Pasquale: 5.5 – Committed as always on the left, but struggled at times against Camoranesi, even if this is nothing to be ashamed of given the winger's current form.
Motta: 6 - Relatively sound on the right was the Italy Under-21 star, but he was unable to go forward much due to Udinese being on the back foot for most of the game.
D’Agostino: 6 – The odd beautiful long range pass, including one brilliant one to Quagliarella, but ultimately gained no foothold in the game due to Poulsen and Sissoko's dominance.
Inler: 5 – An excellent talent, who has been attracting the interest of half of Europe, most notably Arsenal, who bid for him this summer. However, tonight he was barely visible and was overun by the Juve midfield.
Pepe: 6 – Battled gamely up front without much success, and was never shy to try his luck with a number of long shots, including one in the second half that deflected just wide.
Quagliarella: 5.5 – A disappointment up-front was Quagliarella, who was second best against Chiellini for the whole 90 minutes. Has to do better if he wants to get back into the Azzurri set-up.
Di Natale: 6 – Has had a superb start to the new seasons for club-and-country, but was never offered a chance to get into the game tonight. Made little impact and was subbed on 57 minutes for Alexis Sanchez.

Albano Bizzarri (Catania)
A great performance by the Catania goalkeeper. He was on the losing side, but he deserves to be in the Serie A best XI for his showing against Inter. Saved his team from being on the wrong end of an embarrassing scoreline with a number of world-class stops. Outstanding.
Defenders
Maicon (Inter)
A superb display by the Brazilian right-back. He was constantly on the move up and down the wing and. Always lending support all over the park and he grew in stature as the game wore on.
Stephan Lichtsteiner (Lazio)
Kept Antonio Cassano shackled all game and his brilliant intervention on Il Talentino di Bari early was top-draw. It was a challenge which could be seen as a goal for Lazio, it was that good. He also set up Zarate with a pinpoint pass for the striker to score. A great display by the Swiss stopper.
Matteo Ferrari (Genoa)
Although stopping Andriy Shevchenko can hardly be seen as an achievement these days, Ferrari ensured that the Ukrainian didn't get a touch all afternoon. Formed a rock solid partnership at the back with Domenico Criscito in the 2-0 win over Milan.
Christian Maggio (Napoli)
The Italian full back was outstanding. He offered ample cover and was excellent in supporting his teammates when the Azzurri pushed high up the park. His goal won the Partenopei three points as he bangs on Marcello Lippi’s door.
Midfielders
Marek Hamsik (Napoli)
A superb strike by the midfielder saw his side get on the road to three points. He started off a little under par but he improved as the game wore on. Once again he proved his worth to the San Paolo as the crowd gave him a standing ovation in the end.
Momo Sissoko (Juventus)
An absolute colossus in the middle-of-the-park for Juventus, as he completely outpowered Udinese star Gokhan Inler. His partnership with Christian Poulsen is starting to blossom.
Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus)
Outstanding performance from the Italian dynamo. His vision and attacking play was sublime and he was always a threat to Samir Handanovic in goal. A superb all round performance and he was always on hand to ensure his strikers were receiving a constant feed of service.
Strikers
Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo)
Terrorised the Roma defence, with Cicinho and Loria unable to do anything every time he was on the ball. His first goal was top draw, a quick dribble and then he smashed it into the top corner to fire his side level. His second was also of the highest quality as Doni just saw the ball whiz past him. Simply outstanding.
Diego Milito (Genoa)
The Argentine hit-man was superb against Milan as he led his side to a comfortable win over the Rossoneri. He set up Giuseppe Sculli and he won and converted a penalty. He was fundamental throughout the game and both Maldini and Bonera couldn’t touch him. A great return for 'The Prince'.
Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli)
The forward just cannot stop impressing. He has drawn comparisons with Azzurri legend Diego Maradona and his performance against Fiorentina saw glimpses of deja-vu and rolled back the memories of when El Pibe de Or graced the turf in the port city.

Mourinho: Who is Lo Monaco?

Inter's Jose Mourinho has mocked Catania sporting director Pietro Lo Monaco as a war of words between the two clubs starts to gain momentum.
The Italian champions had to fight hard to beat Catania 2-1 last Saturday after they had been reduced to 10 men by the controversial dismissal of Sulley Muntari.
But Mourinho angered Catania director Lo Monaco by claiming that it “should have been 5-1 to Inter” and that he could have played in goal for the Nerazzurri without conceding.
Lo Monaco blasted the Portuguese tactician for a lack of respect, but Mourinho has struck back by satirising the Etnei man's name - Monaco means 'monk' and is also the Italian name for Munich.
“Who is Lo Monaco?” he said. “I know of the Tibetan monk, the Principality of Monaco, Bayern Munich and the Monaco Grand Prix, but that's all.
“If this Lo Monaco wants to make a name for himself by talking about me then he should pay me.
“I already have sponsors who pay me for publicity and I'm not paid to make a name for Lo Monaco. I guess that those who want to be on the front page know how to get there,” he sniped.

Catania sporting director Pietro Lo Monaco has blasted Inter Coach Jose Mourinho for his comments after Saturday's San Siro encounter.
A 10-man Inter side struggled to a 2-1 win over the Sicilians courtesy of a Cristian Terlizzi own goal.
But Mourinho claimed that it should have been 5-1 and that the score-line would have been the same had he been in goal instead of Julio Cesar.
And the Special One's typically bombast statements seem to have angered the Etnei camp.
“Someone who says those things has no respect for opponents, his fellow Coaches or the nation that has welcomed him in,” Lo Monaco bellowed on Radio Anch'io Sport.
“I won't stoop to his level but I will say that we won't be won over by his smooth talk and that he must learn to hold his tongue.
"To be honest I think the Special One needs a smack in the mouth.
“Mourinho would be well served to think about his problems and I hope he wins because if he doesn't he will have to pack his bags quickly and leave.”
There was already tension between the two sides after Sulley Muntari was dismissed for an elbow on Giacomo Tedesco, but the Nerazzurri players claimed there was no contact.
“Everyone knows Muntari and he's not new to this kind of gesture,” Lo Monaco said in closing. “He totally deserved his dismissal.”
