Englands Superstar Wayne Rooney provoziert die deutsche Fußball-Nationalmannschaft. „Ich will Deutschland aus dem Turnier werfen. Es wäre super, wenn wir bei der WM gegen sie spielen würden“, sagte der Angreifer von Manchester United. Die Three Lions könnten im Achtelfinale am 26. Juni in Rustenburg auf die Auswahl des Deutschen Fußball-Bundes (DFB) treffen. Dafür müsste Deutschland die Gruppe D gewinnen, England in der Gruppe C Zweiter werden – oder umgekehrt.
„Deutschland hat gegen Australien sehr gut gespielt. Aber bislang habe ich bei dieser WM noch kein Team gesehen, vor dem wir Angst haben müssten“, sagte der 24-Jährige, der trotz des mageren 1:1 zum WM-Auftakt gegen die USA keinen Zweifel daran hat, dass die englische Nationalmannschaft das Achtelfinale erreicht: „Wir werden keine Probleme haben, uns für das Achtelfinale zu qualifizieren. Davon bin ich überzeugt.“
Das Wortgefecht zwischen dem deutschen und englischen Lager hatte mit der Kritik von Franz Beckenbauer an den Engländern begonnen. Der „Kaiser“ hatte in der südafrikanischen Zeitung Times gesagt: „Was ich in dieser Begegnung gesehen habe, hatte nicht viel mit Fußball zu tun. Es war ein Rückfall in die alte, schlechte Zeit des Kick and Rush.“
