Trip-hop is still not very popular in the USA through a few American musicians and producers have flirted with the style in recent years.
All this trip-hop actively began to materialize into shape around the mid 1980s with DJs and mixers like Smith & Mighty and the Wild Bunch (later known as Massive Attack). It was only later when Massive Attack released their deput album in 1991 followed by Portishead in 1994 that a new "trip-hop" style (coined by the English music press) was recognized.
