Danes denied despite victory

Denmark saw their FIFA World Cup play-off hopes come to an end on Wednesday evening despite claiming all three points in Kazakhstan.
Qualifying chance
The Danes began the day third in Group 2, one point behind Turkey, and needed to win in Almaty to stand any chance of finishing as runners-up while hoping their nearest rivals slipped up in Albania. But although second-half goals from Michael Gravgaard and Jon Dahl Tomasson ensured Denmark kept their end of the bargain, a 1-0 victory for Turkey in Tirana - who only took the lead when Morten Olsen's men were two up - was enough to deny both Denmark and Greece a play-off place behind group winners Ukraine.
Gravgaard miss
It was a nervy opening half for the Danes, who might have been expected to dominate against a team who only secured their first World Cup point as UEFA members on Saturday in Georgia. Gravgaard went close with a header but his effort flew just over the Kazakhstan goal.
Danish goals
However, confidence was restored during the interval and within seconds of the restart Gravgaard made amends for his earlier miss by slotting in the visitors' opener. Denmark doubled their lead just two minutes later with Søren Larsen heading a Niclas Jensen cross into the path of Tomasson, who struck from close range. However, news then came through of Turkey's goal.
Avdeyev dismissed
Kazakhstan reduced the deficit four minutes from time when Aleksandr Kuchma got the better of Gravgaard before sweeping the ball past goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen - but things soon deteriorated for the hosts when Igor Avdeyev was sent off two minutes later. The result ultimately had little relevance, however, as Turkey's victory signalled an end to Denmark's World Cup dreams.

Czechs earn another chance

The Czech Republic kept their cool in Finland to ensure a FIFA World Cup play-off berth at the expense of Romania.
Romania wait
Defeat at home by the Netherlands on Saturday had not only ensured the Dutch would win Group 1, but also effectively ended the Czechs' hopes of qualifying as one of the two best runners-up across the eight pools. Indeed, one point behind Romania - who won their last fixture in Finland on Saturday - the Czechs needed victory in Helsinki to move back into second place.
Early opener
Finland created the first real chance, Toni Kuivasto's header following a free-kick superbly saved by Petr Čech. And just six minutes in the visitors were ahead. Tomáš Jun, a replacement for the injured Milan Baroš, was sent clear by Vladimír Šmicer. He raced past the home defence and had no problem in shooting past Finnish goalkeeper Jussi Jääskeläinen. Zdeněk Grygera then went close for the dominant Czechs after being set up by Karel Poborský, who himself also missed a good chance.
Jääskeläinen save
Finland were trying hard to ensure their, and Romania's, group campaign ended in happy fashion, and Kuivasto's header hit the crossbar. But they were regularly caught out at the back and in the 40th minute Tomáš Ujfaluši was only denied by a Jääskeläinen save.
Play-off secure
As in the first half, it took just six minutes of the second period for the Czechs to strike as a headed clearance from a Pavel Mareš cross fell nicely for Tomáš Rosický to volley in. Seven minutes later it was 3-0 as Marek Heinz produced a left-footed shot past Jääskeläinen. Finland finish fourth with 16 points, while the Czechs can look forward to Friday's play-off draw.

Helstad heightens Norwegian hopes

A second-half goal from Thorstein Helstad secured victory for Norway in Belarus providing a timely boost for Åge Hareide's team ahead of Friday's FIFA World Cup play-off draw.
Play-off berth
Belarus, who won in Scotland on Saturday, approached the tie weakened by injury with Maksim Romaschenko, Sergei Yaskovich and Aleksandr Hleb all ruled out. Meanwhile, the Norwegians travelled to Minsk assured of second place in Group 5 following their 1-0 win against Moldova on Saturday, and Helstad's second-half strike will do their confidence no harm ahead of the two-legged play-off on 12 and 16 November.
Kovba close
The first half proved to be a disappointing affair with Belarus clearly missing influential Arsenal FC midfield player Hleb. Denis Kovba went closest to breaking the deadlock for the home team, but his shot from distance was parried by Thomas Myhre. However, the visitors were a different proposition after the interval and within minutes had forced a double save from goalkeeper Vasili Khomutovski. Jan Gunnar Solli's header was stopped by the Belarus custodian before he also turned away the rebound from Steffen Iversen.
Helstad intervention
The home defence continued to struggle under the pressure being exerted and Norway seemed to have opened the scoring on 63 minutes after Morten Gamst Pedersen steered the ball around Vasili Khomutovski and into the net, only for Austrian referee Konrad Plautz to rule out the effort for offside. Seven minutes later, the Norwegians again found the target as Helstad finished from close range after Khomutovski had punched away Solli's initial strike.
Bulgya threatens
Norway almost saw their hard work undone ten minutes from time when a slip from defender Erik Hagen let in Vitali Bulyga for a clear run on goal. The Belarus striker, however, saw his effort saved by Myhre to ensure a morale-boosting win.

Sweden reach fourth straight finals

Sweden ensured their place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals with victory against Iceland today - despite missing out on top spot in Group 8 - the first time they have ever qualified for four consecutive major finals.
Having to wait
Defeat by Croatia on Saturday meant Sweden were not mathematically qualified until tonight. After the Czech Republic won 3-0 in Finland earlier, Sweden still needed to avoid a double-figure defeat to avoid the play-offs, and although they fell behind such a result was never a possibility.
Swift equaliser
Iceland, with nothing but pride to play for, got off to a blistering start as Kari Árnason scored in the 25th minute with a thunderous drive from 30 metres to shock a rusty Swedish side. The home fans, who had packed the Råsunda stadium to maximum capacity, started to turn against their players, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic silenced those audible fears five minutes later as he picked up a clearance from Auðun Helgason and put the ball beyond the reach of Iceland goalkeeper Árni Arason.
Larsson strike
Sweden were still not at their best but the second goal was a beautiful move involving half the team. Ibrahimovic eventually set up Henrik Larsson with a delicate pass and the FC Barcelona striker lobbed Arason to put Sweden 2-1 up at the break.
Clinching goal
The second half looked very much like the first, with Sweden dominating but without creating much in the way of real chances. Iceland rarely posed a threat and the game slowed down. In the closing minutes Kim Källström converted a pass from Marcus Allbäck to make it 3-1, enough for Swedish qualification, though Croatia finished first in the group on their head-to-head record after drawing 0-0 in Hungary tonight.

１６分，是芬蘭足球近十年以來最高的外圍賽得分，有不少人說，芬蘭國家隊進步了，今屆最初階段４戰３勝，以９分排在榜首，有人開始相信，這支位從未有嘗試世界盃是甚麼滋味的隊伍，有機會爭到一個出線席位了。然而，這一切都是假象。
要出線，除了要對弱旅保持水準，獲得大量分數外，還要在與強敵對話時獲得優勢。但看一看這一組的形勢，芬蘭僅列第四名，落後第三的羅馬尼亞８分之多，積及更只是榜首荷蘭（３２分）的一半。撇開了對馬其頓、安道爾及亞美尼亞等魚腩外，芬蘭與其他三強對碰的總得分是－－「０」分。

對弱隊早早就取得優勢，往往上半場就能領先；相反，對強隊又連４５分鐘也守不住，下半場急急進攻反而再失幾球，這個情況於主場尤其明顯。對荷蘭一役，上半場與對手一輪對攻後被雲尼斯杜萊射成１：０後，下半場全軍壓上反而造成最後十分鐘連失三球，慘敗０：４。對羅馬尼亞、對捷克如是。（不過論整場形勢或埋門威脅性都是以對手為佳）

外圍賽初段，中場線一路由紐美拿、列馬倫、拉希拿迪及高卡組成，艾利文高站位比他們前，於科素兩旁走動。這一段時期，芬蘭前線的發揮較理想，畢竟列馬倫傳送的造詣是歐洲一級水準的，在他調度下，兩位老將紐美拿及高卡一人一段，左右夾攻，拉希拿迪負責掃蕩之餘，亦擅長從後殺上攻門，加上艾利文高這位芬蘭新一代的最佳球員有理想演出，外圍賽的上半段面對幾支勁旅，雖然落敗但比賽形勢不落下風。不過這條中場線都已年過３０歲，加上傷病問題，到後段的比賽己沒有機會同時上場。
拿加布隆，華利倫及泰尼奧取代了拉希拿迪的中場席位，當中以泰尼奧最稱職。但是以希健倫及確迪夫等人出任兩翼效果完全有欠理想，戰到中途，領隊希利斯高斯基甚至要艾利文高身兼前鋒翼鋒兩職，也令其威脅大為降低。
前鋒線上選擇不多，科素大傷過後表現回落，對亞美尼亞先開記錄及於馬其頓身上連中三元是他今屆僅有的功勞，其餘時間他只是霸佔著一個前鋒位置在看球，過往的埋門、回球、衝頂等全不復見。不過讓科素當正選前鋒又是無可奈何，祖漢臣的水準及狀態更遜一籌；史祖隆及古基則實力所限。
後防線上，隊長希比亞十二場全勤，但是他年紀漸大，狀態已漸漸下滑。中堅拍擋古華斯圖屬於身型頭搥優異、速度靈活性欠佳的英式中堅。（柏辛倫更加不知所謂）右閘泰軒倫、左閘沙連倫又平平無奇，故芬蘭即使有北歐兩名最好的門將亦無補於事。尼美打了五場失六球後退出國家隊，比尼美稍差的積亞基連倫同樣打了五場，失球高達１２球。
外圍賽最後階段，領隊已經有點亂來，人腳配搭不好，表現亦不好。失去了列馬倫等人，中場沒有連接，最後兩場，芬蘭只是長傳大腳進攻，要破盧邦及施治的十指關只是更方夜譚。
芬蘭有進步嗎？不見得。
不過前景是否沒有寄望？非也。中場的一眾傷將復出後，中場的傳送能力及防守力可以相應的提高。（不是指老將四人組）

伊巴謙莫域、拿臣、龍格堡、韋希臣等，瑞典這一班攻勢球員，他們效力的球會無不是該國的班霸或爭標分子；加上踢法優雅的安達斯史雲遜、穩打穩紮的隊長米爾堡等人，這樣的陣容雖不像巴西、荷蘭般豪華，但是要制服世上任何一支勁旅都非不可能的事。２００２年，瑞典就在大好形勢下被英格蘭迫和、再由安達斯史雲遜的罰球將阿根廷送回老家，從而在「死亡之組」中以首名脫穎而出。
事隔４年，瑞典再回到世界盃大舞台，老將離去、小將輩出，球迷都憧憬球隊可以回到１２年前，由布連、達連、舒華斯、拉維利等人組成的瑞典隊勇奪世界第三的輝煌戰績。
外圍賽中，瑞典的入球之多、失球之少，都是小組之冠，然而與克羅地亞的單打獨鬥卻分出了勝負。瑞典對馬爾他全勝（入１３球）、對冰島全勝（入７球）、對匈牙利（入４球），對保加利亞全勝（入６球），可晁於兩場最重要的榜首爭奪戰卻拿克羅地亞沒法，兩場皆北之餘，平時手到拿來的、易如反掌的入球方式竟全無用武之地。以作客克羅地亞一仗為例，瑞典其實有不少機會組織到禁區附近位置，但是卻沒有辦法再進一步，一到「禁區」便「到此為止」，瑞典攻擊太過正路，欠缺了一點創造力，使對手墮後防守時易於防範。當碰上實力相當的對手加強防守時，沒有伊巴謙莫域的瑞典前線根據就難愈雷池半步。
防守方面，由於中場用上了安達斯史雲遜，故連杜羅夫一個人負責中場的防守工作，但他的實力就是一般而已，不太突出，中場的防守力並不太強；其他三人亦攻強於守，但總算勤於回防。對克羅地亞一役，對手很容易便越過瑞典中場線，直接挑戰米爾堡領衍的後防。伊薩克實力不錯，總算是北歐五大門將之一；艾文奧斯隆特助攻力強、防守亦不過不失；米爾堡退化當中，但在云云瑞典中堅中仍可信任，反而他身邊的盧鍚在球會擔任左後衛，在國家隊中打中堅未有令人信服之表現。
因為其他四隊實在不濟，所以觀看過兩場克瑞之戰後，大概能為現在的瑞典隊定位。

無可否認，「伊巴謙莫域＋拿臣＋龍格堡＋韋希臣＋安達斯史雲遜」這一條攻擊線，可說是歐洲其中一條攻力最強的攻組合。拿臣老於經驗，頂上功夫出眾，而且能與隊友互相配合，傳送能力及視野都不錯；龍格堡把握入楔時機之佳，歐洲中亦數一數二，射門力又強；韋希臣個人突破能力出色，兼且左右皆能，忽左忽右令人防不勝防；安達斯史雲遜腳下功夫不錯，盤傳都有一手，更加上處理死球極具威脅；加上前線的靈魂人物伊巴謙莫域，歐洲有那支球隊有信心對瑞典可保持清白之身呢？事實上，這五人在外圍賽的入球，亦佔了球隊８０％，一個很高的數字。問題是，他們的替補與他們有一段距離，當上面其中一人受傷停賽，球隊實力便會大打折扣。十場外圍賽中，領隊拿格碧克只曾三次將五大皇牌放在正選陣容上，其餘七場，他曾以鐘臣、柯碧克、阿歷桑達臣、卡爾史唐四人代替上陣；阿歷桑達臣及卡爾史唐表現尚可，然而鐘臣及柯碧克都無法好好取代伊巴謙莫域及拿臣的位置，場上表現出來的效果以及得出來的數據都顯示，正選及後補差距實在太大。

中場：阿歷桑達臣，丹尼爾安達臣，卡爾史唐，連杜羅夫，龍格堡，安達斯史雲遜，韋希臣
前鋒：柯碧克，艾文達，伊巴謙莫域，鐘臣，拿臣，羅辛堡
當中沒有伊巴謙莫域的影響最大，他可以自己盤球突破，又可以拉開對手後防，讓拿臣及龍格堡入楔得分，而且埋門的技巧也絕對不差，最重要的是他有很好的想像力，能夠將半個機會化成一個入球。對保加利亞射入一個倒掛、對匈牙利窄角度勁射掛網、對冰島的彈地波，一方面顯示了他的射門技巧，同時亦証明了他別出心裁的想像力，瑞典就是需要這種元素。
後防方面，米爾堡身邊不可以再依靠盧錫之流，彼德漢臣、米高史雲遜絕對有力取而代之，要想加強中場防守及效率的話，阿歷桑達臣會是個理想的考慮。
其實瑞典新人之多，以及優秀，今屆世界盃絕對有力打入八強，幸運的話，甚至能夠達到１９９４美國世界盃的佳績。關鍵是領隊都後選擇相信老將（盧錫、米爾堡、鐘臣、柯碧克等）還是新人（格蘭基斯、卡爾史雲遜、羅辛堡、艾文達等），然而筆者估計最後還是有一班新人要在電視旁觀看德國世界盃了。
