Last-gasp Larsen traps Turkey
Saturday, 3 September 2005
by Türker Tozar
Søren Larsen's stoppage-time equaliser for Denmark ended Turkey's hopes of winning 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 2 - and set up a three-way race for second place between these teams and Greece.
Dramatic twists
Georgia's last-minute equaliser against Ukraine earlier meant a win would have taken 2002 semi-finalists Turkey to within five points of the leaders with two games left. And although the home side were 2-1 up in added time in Istanbul, substitute Larsen's last-gasp intervention left Ukraine celebrating qualification. Turkey, in second, are two and four points ahead of Greece and Denmark respectively, but both those sides have a game in hand.
Jensen opener
Although Ukraine's point meant Denmark could no longer catch them, the visitors began well and midfield player Claus Jensen gave them a 1-0 half-time advantage. His powerful shot went into the net although Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel initially parried the ball.
Turkish changes
Turkey coach Fatih Terim spotted the faltering parts of his side and started the second half with a double substitution, fielding defensive midfield player Hüseyin Çimsir instead of Yildiray Bastürk while Okan Buruk replaced Hasan Sas. These changes proved the game's turning point.
Okan leveller
Okan levelled the game two minutes into the second half with a brilliant right-foot shot that curled into the net. The goalscorer's presence invigorated Hamit Altintop's performance, as he was able to move forward as Okan helped the defence.
Larsen heroics
Nine minutes from time Tümer Metin slotted in a lovely free-kick that seemed to have brought Turkey victory. But three minutes into added time Larsen, and 85th-minute introduction for Jensen, forced his way through a crowd of defenders to keep his side in contention for a play-off place.
Kiev trip
Turkey are the guests at Ukraine's party in Kiev on Wednesday, hoping for a victory that would keep their rivals at bay. That night Denmark welcome the side that nearly postponed Ukraine's qualification until midweek, Georgia, and Greece go to Kazakhstan.

Andorra fend off Finland
Saturday, 3 September 2005
Andorra's improvement as a footballing force continued today as they held Finland to a 0-0 draw in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 1.
Andorra tally
Before this competition, Andorra had never gained a single point in major tournament qualifying, but their 2006 tally is now five after today's result. Finland, who defeated Andorra 3-0 at home earlier in qualifying, wanted another win to keep their slim hopes alive, but they now look likely to have to settle for fourth place behind the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Romania.
Eremenko miss
Finland took control of the match from the kick-off and had chances to break through in the opening minutes. Peter Kopteff cleverly created space to send in a cross from the right, only for Alexei Eremenko to fail to find the target with his header. Shefki Kuqi's header was then tipped away by Andorra goalkeeper Koldo Alvarez.
Andorran solidity
The home side looked solid in midfield, however, with Ildefons Lima and Sergio Moreno both working hard, although Justo Ruíz's first-half free-kick was their only real attempt on goal. Finland in contrast carved out several more opportunities to take the points, Mikael Forssell having an effort blocked by Alvarez before Eremenko's header from Sami Hyypiä's knock-back flew over and the visitors' last chance had gone.
Dutch trip
Having overtaken Armenia to move into sixth, Andorra have a tough trip to the Netherlands on Wednesday. Finland welcome F.Y.R. Macedonia the same day.

Pedersen plunders vital points
Saturday, 3 September 2005
by Martin Pavcnik
Morton Gamst Pedersen earned Norway a last-gasp win in Slovenia to lift them three points clear of their third-placed opponents in 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 5.
Two comebacks
The Blackburn Rovers FC midfield player scored a superb solo effort with only a minute remaining to finally silence the home crowd. It was a cruel blow to Slovenia, who had twice come from behind after John Carew's first-minute strike sparked off an entertaining encounter in Celje.
Difficult conditions
The Olympique Lyonnais striker capitalised on some lax defending by Brane Oblak's side and comfortably slotted the ball past goalkeeper Borut Mavric. Even at that early stage, the goal had been coming as the two back lines struggled with the treacherous conditions caused by the driving rain.
Immediate response
Slovenia had already missed two opportunities by then, Milenko Ačimovič and Aleksandar Rodic both spurning chances, but it proved third-time lucky for the home side when Sebastijan Cimirotic equalised within 60 seconds of Carew's opener. But they sat back immediately and allowed the visitors to take the initiative, and soon paid for it as Claus Lundekvam restored the advantage on 24 minutes.
Zlogar goal
Slovenia coach Branko Oblak reshuffled at the interval, and the home team showed much more intent after the break with Cimirotic, Rodic and Nastha Ceh all testing goalkeeper Thomas Myhre. The pressure finally told with seven minutes remaining when Ceh crossed for Anton Zlogar to make it 2-2. But there was still time for Pedersen to break Slovenian hearts.
Key fixtures
Norway, in second, are now two points behind Italy, and will return to Oslo to face Scotland on Wednesday knowing that victory will take them top if the Azzurri lose in Belarus. If Norway slip up, though, Slovenia could draw back alongside them with a win in Moldova, though the Scandiniavians have the edge on head-to-head record should they end level on points.

Swedish strikes sink Bulgaria
Saturday, 3 September 2005
by Jan Juhlin
Three second-half goals ensured Sweden bolstered their FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 8 campaign - while virtually ending Bulgaria's hopes.
Croatian challenge
Sweden remain a point behind leaders Croatia, while Bulgaria knew only victory would keep their realistic chances alive. It was the home side who dominated from the start, and in the first half Bulgarian goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov had to make two supreme saves from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and one from Fredrik Ljungberg.
Isaksson save
Bulgaria rarely looked like threatening the Swedish defence, though a quick counterattack saw Martin Petrov ease past Alexander Östlund. Stade Rennais FC goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson saved the day with his legs.
Georgiev off
The second period got off to a frantic starts as Balgoy Georgiev picked up his second yellow card after tripping Ljungberg. Georgiev's dismissal was not to Bulgarian coach Hristo Stoitchkov's liking and after registering his protest he was sent into the stands.
First goal
With an extra man, Sweden took an even stronger grip on the game, and raised the tempo. On the hour Henrik Larsson found Ljungberg inside the box, and with a delicate twist the Arsenal FC midfield player was through on Ivankov and gave Sweden a deserved lead. Just four minutes later Larsson came close, but his powerful header flew just wide.
Lead doubles
Bulgaria tried to push forward and came close to an equaliser as Martin Petrov's 68th minute free-kick was saved by Isaksson. That proved invaluable and with a quarter-hour left the advantage doubled as defender Olof Mellberg headed past Ivankov.
Victory clinched
Sweden did not let up, and in the dying minutes Larsson's back-header found Ibrahimovic, who made no mistake as he blasted in his shot. If Sweden win in Hungary on Wednesday they will be assured of at least a play-off place, while fourth-placed Bulgaria go to Iceland.

Danish dream still alive
Wednesday, 7 September 2005
by Peter Bruun
from Copenhagen
Denmark did all they could to keep their chances of reaching the FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs alive as they beat Georgia in almost playful style in Copenhagen.
Hard task
Victories for Greece and Turkey tonight mean that Denmark, despite their dramatic draw in Istanbul on Saturday and this result, must win their October matches at home against Greece and away to Kazakhstan - and hope Turkey get nothing more than a draw away against Albania - to finish in the top two in Group 2.
Jensen opener
With Denmark's first shot on goal, Claus Jensen made it 1-0 in the tenth minute, sending a direct free-kick from 25 metres into the top corner of the goal. The Danes were dominating the game, and continued producing scoring opportunities. Martin Jørgensen went close when found unmarked in the box, before the situation got even gloomier for Georgia in the 20th minute, as Otar Khizaneishvili was sent off after a professional foul on Jon Dahl Tomasson just outside his penalty area.
Lead doubles
This made the Danish pressure even heavier, and inevitably Christian Poulsen made it 2-0 in the 30th minute. Claus Jensen's free-kick from the left was flicked on by Daniel Agger to Poulsen, who headed in. In the 37th minute, Georgi Demetradze converted a penalty for Georgia, before Jørgensen hit the crossbar and Agger then headed Denmark 3-1 ahead from Jensen's corner on the left.
Continued dominance
The Danish dominance continued after the break, and in the 55th minute Tomasson turned in a fine cross from Martin Jørgensen on the left. After Dennis Rommedahl and Tomasson had both gone close, substitute Søren Larsen – the weekend hero - made use of yet another Jørgensen cross from the left to put Denmark 5-1 ahead with eleven minutes left.
Larsen again
With six minutes to go another cross from Jørgensen allowed Larsen to head in his second goal of the night, and his sixth in five internationals, making the final result 6-1. However, Denmark still have plenty of work to do next month.

Finland toast Forssell treble
Wednesday, 7 September 2005
by Mikael Erävuori
Finland made amends for Saturday's disappointing goalless draw in Andorra by recording their most emphatic victory of their Group 1 campaign, Mikael Forssell scoring a hat-trick in a 5-1 against F.Y.R. Macedonia in Tampere.
Early goals
Forssell may have been struggling for goals since recovering from a serious knee injury, but the €4.5m Birmingham City FC striker struck twice inside 13 minutes at the Ratina stadium tonight. Alexei Eremenko Jr created the opener in the eleventh minute, slipping in a pass for Forssell who beat visiting goalkeeper Gogo Jovcev with a crisp finish. The second, two minutes later, owed itself to the industry of Aki Riihilahti, the Crystal Palace FC player fighting to win possession before teeing up Forssell who again made no mistake.
Defensive lapse
Forssell had provided Finland with a perfect platform to record a significant success and they moved a step closer to that three minutes before half-time, Eremenko Jr this time providing the assist for central defender Hannu Tihinen to powerfully head in the third. Goran Maznov gave F.Y.R. Macedonia some hope with another headed goal in the 49th minute, only for a defensive mistake to undo that and allow Eremenko Jr to stroke in Finland's fourth soon after.
Treble completed
The night belonged to Forssell, however, and he drilled in another from ten metres shortly after the hour to complete his hat-trick and the scoring. That fifth goal killed the game, with the Finns content to retain possession without ever looking like adding a sixth. None the less, with two games to go they are out of the running for a place in the FIFA World Cup play-offs.

Scotland savour Miller strikes
Wednesday, 7 September 2005
by Eivind Aarre
from Oslo
Kenny Miller followed his goal against Italy with two more in Oslo as Scotland continued to breathe life into their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Team reinvigorated
The Scots appeared out of the running for a place in the top two in Group 5 until Walter Smith replaced Berti Vogts and reinvigorated the team, supporters and chances of being in Germany next year. Scotland's recent improvement has manifested itself in two excellent performances in five days, drawing 1-1 with the Azzurri prior to this Miller-inspired success at the Ullevål stadium.
Exquisite flick
Norway, who remain two points clear of the Scots in second place behind Italy with two games to go, were the first team to have the ball in the net, only for Claus Lundekvam to see his header at the far post ruled out for a foul on Andy Webster. The Scots took full advantage in the 21st minute, as Jan Gunnar Solli - the Rosenborg BK midfielder drafted in to play at right-back - was beaten in the air by James McFadden and Miller nipped in to exquisitely flick the ball beyond Thomas Myhre with the outside of his right boot.
Defensive error
The Norwegians responded by upping the tempo, yet it was the visitors who found the important second goal. Paul Hartley swung in an innocuous cross from the right which was heading behind when André Bergdølmo inexplicably dived and headed it back to Miller, who was afforded the freedom of Oslo before picking his spot and sending the large travelling contingent wild.
Miller off
That proved to be Miller's final act, as an earlier collision with Vidar Riseth left him unable to continue. Norway's three half-time changes were not enforced, however, as coach Âge Hareide brought on Ole Martin Årst, Daniel Braaten and Kristofer Hæsted for Egil Østenstad, Alex Valencia and Jan Gunnar Solli. Scotland responded by dropping deeper and playing on the break, with McFadden forcing a reflex save from Myhre in the 75th minute following one such counter.
Still alive
Norway finally scored in the 89th minute, Årst beating Craig Gordon with a low drive from the edge of the area, but the visitors held on to keep the group alive.

Ibrahimovic seals Swedish success
Wednesday, 7 September 2005
A last-gasp goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic was enough to give Sweden all three points in a tight encounter with Hungary in Budapest and move the Scandinavian side top of FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 8.
Clinical finish
After both teams spurned a host of opportunities, the match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw until the Juventus FC forward struck in added time, collecting a ball from Mattias Jonson before turning his marker and firing past Gábor Király. It earned Lars Lagerbäck's side a sixth successive win and moved them above Croatia - who were held in Malta tonight - at the summit.
Andersson strike
Although the visitors enjoyed much of the early pressure, it was Hungary who carved out the first glimpse of goal when László Bodnár ghosted past Christoffer Andersson before releasing Szabolcs Huszti, whose half-volley forced Andreas Isaksson into an acrobatic save. Andersson showed far greater poise at the other end on 37 minutes, though, firing a shot just wide of the target after Niclas Alexandersson's free-kick had been half-cleared.
Gera volley
Henrik Larsson went close to giving Sweden the advantage a minute before the interval, sending a powerful header just over the crossbar. But Hungary were equal to the visitors throughout and Zoltán Gera forced a fingertip save from Isaksson with a blistering volley on 68 minutes after capitalising on Olof Mellberg's defensive error.
Croatia test
Like Andersson before him, Mellberg responded by testing Király with a towering header and just when it seemed the spoils would be shared, Ibrahimovic scored his seventh goal of the qualifying campaign. The result ends Hungary's slender hopes of qualification and leaves Sweden's match with Croatia on 8 October looking like a group decider.
