JJ = R.Keane + 5m
We're Keane on JenasSpurs will today offer Newcastle United 5m and their Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane in exchange for Jermaine Jenas.
And United will finally try to prise Luis Boa Morte away from Fulham and into a black and white shirt in time for Saturday's game with West Ham at St James' Park.
But United know that if Liverpool have made an 11m bid to Real Madrid for Michael Owen as was reported over the weekend then they can forget all about the persuading the England striker to join them.
They also know that reports saying that a swap deal involving Jenas and Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka is a non-starter.
And so too is any deal involving United and Spurs and Jenas and Freddie Kanoute with the former West Ham striker yet to have a good game north of Watford.
Spurs do not have United's asking price of at least 10 for Jenas and this leaves allowing Keane to join United as the only alternative. There will be talks today between Freddy Shepherd and Daniel Levy today now that the latter has returned from a business trio to America.
Graeme Souness is fully aware of Keane's goal-scoring ability but in an ideal world he is looking for the pace and power up front that the likes of Viduka and Nicolas Anelka would provide.
But looking at if from outside while Anelka has been agitating for a move to Newcastle and was actually involved in a tantrum with the Fenerbahce bench over the weekend United might be left with a straight choice of doing a deal with Spurs for Keane and involving Jenas or starting again in their search for a striker with exactly a fortnight left for the transfer window closes.
Freddy Shepherd has not been keen on talking about transfers in the close season because he knows once United show their hand up goes the price.
But Shepherd was delighted with the way United performed at Highbury yesterday and he knows that if he can get a left winger and a striker in then they could well be one of the contenders for a Champions League place next season.
As far as the left-winger is concerned, Boa Morte is still first choice although Emre has been telling United about his former Inter Milan Dutch colleague Andy van der Meyde.
Fulham are making a determined effort to keep Boa Morte and Chris Coleman made him captain in Saturday's goalless draw with Birmingham City at Craven Cottage.
