Worry over injured players
Newcastle United fear that key midfielders Kieron Dyer and Emre could be out of action for around a month with the injuries which saw them both limp off in Sunday's match with Manchester United.
And Nobby Solano who is suspended for the next couple of matches against Fulham and Blackburn Rovers would have missed them in any case because of a thigh injury.
This is the rather sobering news for United as Tyneside continues to bask in the signing of Michael Owen.
For the word I am hearing from St James' Park is that Emre will be sidelined for "three to six weeks" after he suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury he picked up playing for Turkey against Bulgaria in Sofia a fortnight ago.
And I also hear that United expect to see Emre back in a black-and-white shirt before Dyer.
However, I gather that while both players could be out for around a month, United are quite optimistic that both will return fully fit.
Certainly, Emre's injury is not as bad as it could have been after the Turkish international was seen grimacing as he was helped off last Sunday.
And while Dyer was distraught after failing to finish yet another United match, the club are confident they will get to the bottom of his injury problems.
Assistant manager Alan Murray admitted that it was a gamble to play both Emre and Dyer against Manchester United.
Obviously, the club's medical staff would have urged caution but Emre is likely to have wanted to play so that he could have joined up with Turkey for their World Cup qualifying games.
And to Dyer's credit, he was prepared to have a go against Man U as he continued his treatment from top German doctor Hans Muller Wolfart knowing that there was always going to be a chance that he would break down again.
The good news for United is that two of the other four players under treatment, Lee Bowyer and Craig Moore, will be there or thereabouts by the time Fulham come to St James' Park a week tomorrow.
This will leave Michael Chopra and Titus Bramble as their long-term injuries with Dyer and Emre, although the latter is looking to return soon.
