A FORMER Manchester United star has been arrested by police investigating an organised crime gang which gunned down a security guard during an armed robbery.
Ronnie Wallwork, who played for England at under-20 level, was detained as he flew into Britain by an elite crime fighting unit probing a racket in which high performance cars were stolen to use in a string of vicious raids across six counties.
The 33-year-old was questioned on suspicion of stealing cars and later bailed pending further inquiries.
Wallwork played for United 19 times and won an Old Trafford Young Player of the Year award before going on to forge a career with West Brom, Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday.
Six other men were also detained by detectives on suspicion of a range offences including attempted murder, conspiracy to rob and firearms offences. Four were subsequently charged.
The 27-year old Securicor guard was blasted in the leg during a cashpoint raid last March at a Tesco Express in Fulwood, near Preston, Lancs.
He was delivering money to the Tesco cash machine when he was ambushed by two robbers both wearing motorcycle helmets.
Last year Lancashire Police set up roadblocks on the main roads in the county to stop villains from Manchester and Liverpool coming in after they blamed them for the sharp increase in robberies on shops, homes and businesses.
Suspects were stopped at Lancashire's borders using all available resources including firearms officers, motorway officers, dog patrols and the Air Support Unit.
Wallwork who now runs a designer clothes business was held on suspicion of stealing cars as he flew in from a holiday flight to Manchester Airport. He will answer bail next week.
A Lancashire Police spokesman confirmed two men - one aged 48 from Preston and another man aged 50 from Newton Heath, Manchester - had been charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and attempted robbery.
They were also charged with conspiracy to commit robbery between August and November 2010 in the North of England.
Two other men - one aged 24 from Middleton near Manchester and another aged 29 from Newton Heath - had both been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. All four were remanded in custody by Preston magistrates until February.
The force confirmed Wallwork and two other men aged 21 and 26 - also from Manchester were bailed.

A Lancs Police spokesman said: "The 33-year old from Manchester arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicles has been given bail until 18 January. The arrests follow a protracted covert investigation, code named 'Operation Solomon'.
In November 2006, Wallwork was stabbed seven times with a fish knife by a jealous love rival in the VIP area of the trendy Sugar Lounge bar on Deansgate Locks, Manchester.
A court heard he had been dating the ex-girlfriend of gym instructor Robert Rimmer who he became "resentful and angry."
Rimmer, then 21, initially went up to the footballer at the bar to suggest he leave but when Wallwork refused, he set about him with a knife leaving needing life saving surgery.
Rimmer was later jailed for five years for wounding. |
