Japan’s Brazilian coach Zico will not continue in his position after the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Japanese newspapers reported that the Brazilian legend, who took over the reins of the team in July 2002, made clear his intentions of quitting in a television interview here.
“I will lead the Japan national team till the end of the World Cup,” said Zico whose contract expires at around the same time next year. “My work finishes there.”
Though Japan qualified for the World Cup last month, their campaign under Zico was not exactly smooth. There were public protests calling for his resignation after a string of poor shows in the initial matches but the Brazilian managed to deliver not only in the World Cup qualifiers but also in the Confederations Cup where they beat European champions Greece and just lost out on a semi-finals spot.
About the Confederations Cup, Zico said Japan had proved their point. “We are now in the top-flight of world football and we were able to show our ability to the world in the Confederations Cup.”
The coach also had a word of advice for midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura. “I expect Shunsuke to excel in the World Cup but he should be careful as he will be very closely marked by opponents. I think he has to improve his physique a bit as this will help him to play even better.”
