簡單的英文問題

I like to play guitar, this is correct.
But do I have to add 'the' when I say

I like to play piano or
I like to play 'the' piano..

It seems the first one is more correct.
But someone challenged me that I should add 'the' whenever I mention 'piano'.

加左 the 個 focus 唔同左 ....

前者係你喜歡彈琴呢項活動/習慣 ....

後者係你喜歡彈那一個琴 ....

同樣好少人會講 play the football, play the mah-jong ....

仲話由細到大都係咁講.

有讀者問為甚麼彈琴不是 Play piano？

很多人以為彈琴是 Play piano，這錯誤非常普遍。可能大家對英文冠詞(Articles)不熟悉。有時 the 與單數可數名詞連用，可以表示泛指，而科學儀器、發明品及樂器的名稱都常常這樣用。例如：Life would be quieter without the telephone 是「要是沒有電話，生活可就會清靜一些了」，I am learning to play the piano 是「我正在學彈鋼琴」等於 I am learning the piano，Who's that on the piano？ 是「那個彈鋼琴的是誰呀？」，The violin is more difficult than the piano 是「拉小提琴比彈琴更為困難」。所以拉小提琴是 Play the violin，「彈吉他」是 Play the guitar，「吹號角」是 Play the horn。注意：「踢足球」是 Play football ，「打籃球」是 Play basketball，「打排球」是 Play volleyball，打球都不加 the。
