D-Ro named tops in Canada
(FIFA.com) 02 Feb 2007
In an announcement on 2 February by the Canadian Soccer Association, Dwayne De Rosario - who led debutant side Houston Dynamo to last year's MLS title - was named Canada's best male player for the calendar year of 2006. It is DeRosario's second Canadian Player of the Year award on the trot, after picking up the 2005 honours as well.
Known to fans and team-mates as 'D-Ro', the Dynamo star and Toronto native has won three MLS titles in his time with San Jose Earthquakes and Houston. And as a capper to a stunning 2006 in which he scored eleven goals as one of Houston's main attacking threats, he tallied the lone strike in a brilliant display in a 1-0 over Chelsea in Major League Soccer's all-star game in August of 2006.
An elegant withdrawn striker with pace and keen vision, De Rosario has been in MLS since 2001 and has emerged as one of the best players in the American top flight in recent years. Short-listed for MLS Player of the Year for 2006, the 37-times capped Canadian international is considered the focal point for a hopeful Canuck charge to the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Fifty percent of the voting came by way of local media with the other half from an on-line poll at Canadasoccer.com, the official website of the Canadian Soccer Association. Winning the media voting, De Rosario was edged out in the on-line portion by FC Copenhagen striker Atiba Hutchinson.
Speaking to members of the media on Friday, De Rosario, 28, was grateful for the distinction. "I feel blessed and honoured to receive this award," he said. "It's always a privilege to pull on the national team jersey. I always try to give my all and make a go of it, and I appreciate everyone who has taken note of that."
With the qualification rounds for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010 rapidly approaching, Dwayne told FIFA.com of his hopes for Canada to reach their second finals after more than two decades in the wilderness.
"I think it's a realistic goal for us," he remarked. "The dream is always to play in a World Cup and I believe that we have the potential and ability to qualify. I will do everything I can to reach that goal for myself and for the fans. Right now we have made some changes in the organisation (Canada Soccer) and really want to make the dream of a finals appearance come true."
With Toronto FC set to become the first Major League Soccer side based in Canada when the 2007 season gets underway in April, D-Ro is also hoping to one day play for his home-town club.
"It's great to have a professional team in Canada," he added. "And Toronto is a great place to start it off. Now the kids up in Canada can look forward to playing for a local team in Toronto FC and I hope one day to wear the uniform of my hometown club. I would live to represent the city where I was born and raised."
With no immediate intention of leaving Houston (for Toronto or European shores), De Rosario will be keen to keep the momentum going as the Dynamo look to repeat their first-year heroics in 2007.
Also on Friday, ace striker Christine Sinclair scooped the award on the women's side while youth standouts David Edgar of Newcastle United and Jodi Ann Robinson picked up the awards in the under-20 category.
