University sacks head of union over thousands in missing funds

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY has sacked the president of its student union following allegations of financial mismanagement and a police investigation into missing funds.
The university council decided yesterday to remove Victor Ma and other student office bearers from the board of the student union, Students At Macquarie (SAM), even though he has yet to be interviewed by police about $100,000 missing from the organisation's accounts.
There is no suggestion Mr Ma took the money.
The Federal Court appointed a provisional liquidator yesterday to oversee the organisation at least until a review on Tuesday.
The university said in a written statement that the sackings were necessary "to ensure that student fees collected by SAM were not misused".
Mr Ma spent nearly two hours waiting outside closed doors while the university council, on which he sits as the elected student representative, deliberated his fate.
"I think there's a bit of character assassination going on," he said. "I can only wonder who's doing it.
"If I had taken $100,000 away from students, how do you account I would be standing right here talking to you? How could that be possible?
"I believe there's certain intentions and motivations behind these issues."
He said he would stay on the university council and as chairman of the student representative council, which is insolvent.
It is understood that the student representative council spent $322,509 on salaries last year, including more than $76,000 for Mr Ma's wife, Wendy Kwai, but received only $218,762 in income.
It is understood the university was alerted to irregularities in the student organisations by student whistleblowers.
The vice-chancellor, Steven Schwartz, asked Deloitte to audit the organisations.
"The issues that led to the removal of the outgoing SAM president convince me of the urgent need to reform Macquarie's main student bodies to ensure that they are transparent, accountable and properly represent the needs of students rather than the self interests of elected officials," Professor Schwartz said yesterday.
Mr Ma said his sacking was part of a "hidden agenda" by the university to amalgamate the student bodies and eliminate the student voice.
He said he had told the chief executive to answer the questions put to him by Deloitte, which would explain why salaries were rising beyond their means and why money had been transferred from SAM to the student council.
