* Djokovic v Federer: As it happened!
Djokovic worked his way through the top three players in the world in as many days adding the Federer scalp to those of Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal that he claimed in the quarter and semi finals respectively.
"This is the best tournament of my career," Djokovic told the crowd.
"I won a [Masters] in Miami but here I beat the number three [Roddick] in the quarters, the number two [Nadal] in the semis and in the final, I beat the number one.
"I couldn't ask for more. I played some impressive tennis all week. This is a dream come true. And I hope he's not angry, but I'd like to say to Roger that he can't win everything, sometimes somebody else has to win."
The 20-year-old, who will return to the number three slot when the new world rankings are released on Monday, made a storming start breaking Federer in the second game before cementing the break with a very authoritative love service game.
The break seemed to act as a wake up call to Federer, who got himself off the mark in the very next game with his first ace before breaking back immediately with some serve and volley action, following up heavy serves with a foray into the net.
Five comfortable service games later and Federer broke again when Djokovic hit his forehand just deep of the baseline, suggesting the slow start to the beginning of the match had just been a little game for the world number one.
But what he certainly was not expecting was for his younger, and less experienced, opponent to stand up for himself immediately breaking back with the longest game of the match during which Federer squandered six set points.
Federer looked at a loss as to what he could do to break down the Serb who forced the tiebreak with a ferocious forehand down the line. Djokovic then raced out to a 5-1 lead at the change of ends in the breaker before Federer knew what had hit him.
With confidence visibly building on every shot, Djokovic did not take long to wrap up the set on his first attempt firing down a massive serve which Federer dumped into the bottom of the net.
But the effort of the first set seemed to take it's toll on the 20-year-old who, after being forced to save three break points in the just two games before, conceded sixth game of the set as Federer looked to restore the balance.
Sure enough the Swiss maestro cemented the break before making a charge for the set on Djokovic's serve in the eighth game. With two set points under his belt, Federer was not going to repeat his mistakes of the first set and duly wrapped up the second at the first attempt with a backhand down the line.
But all credit to Djokovic as he immediately struck back breaking Federer's serve in the very first game of the second set, again throwing doubt into the mind of the world number one, who was playing in his first tournament since winning a record fifth consecutive Wimbledon title.
Much like in the first set Djokovic sealed the break with a love service game before Federer could even think about getting himself on the scoreboard.
With competent service games coming from both players the game looked to be chugging towards an unspectacular finish. But Federer was not done yet.
After firing down an angry ace to hold serve in the seventh game, the defending champion pounced setting up two break back points with a very lucky net cord which saw a well-wide backhand just catching the line.
Federer, not usually one to waste an opportunity, immediately fired Djokovic's tame second serve back with added aggression forcing his opponent to stretch and put the backhand wide.
Back on serve Federer quickly set up a real test of Djokovic's nerve by forcing the 20-year-old to hold to stay in the match.
But Djokovic proved more than match for the 26-year-old emphatically holding to love before dropping just one point in the 12th game to force the decisive breaker.
No doubt buoyed by the comparative ease of the first tiebreak, Djokovic again raced out to a 5-1 lead at the change of ends hitting the lines seemingly at ease, before Federer handed his opponent five match points by severely mistiming a forehand which went shooting up into the air.
Djokovic only needed one chance though and he sealed the title, as well as his first win over Federer, with the cheeky combination of a drop shot and lob, drawing Federer up to the net before sending him scampering back to try and retrieve an inch perfect lob.
