What will the future bring? part 2
A bright future for Sylvie and Rafael…
Okay, so we checked out our technical staff and our keeper-potential.
I am pretty confident there… I mean, Martin Jol or Co Adriaanse may have been better team managers, but how can you know, really… Co and Louis van Gaal have a similar working method and Louis certainly failed (I don’t buy the “he had injured players” bull to be honest…). If you make a list of specs for a new coach, I’m pretty sure Bert would have ticked all the boxes. Even the one “has good relationship with Mark van Bommel” :-)
Defensively, that’s where we have our issues. Let’s take a look.
Defense
The criticism on our defense is classic. Basically, all our defenders in the course of history had to cop it. Frank de Boer had his little mistakes, Rijkaard was too aloof and complacent, Reiziger wasn’t a real defender, Bogarde was a boofhead, Koeman was too slow, etc etc. It’s part of our nature to look down on defenders, I guess.
Dutch defenders need to be able to defend, build up, have great long pass, need to be fast, great tacklers, good headers, play the violin and be nice to old ladies…
Our current defense have the statistics to back them up. They didn’t concede a lot (also thanks to one Mr Van der Sar of course). But during the France and Russia game it became clear that when the midfielders are a tad out of reach, none of them has the balls or skills to move up a tad and start the build up.
By the way, just to soothe our pain, the Germans defended horribly against Turkey yesterday… As did Materazzi, Paolo Ferreira… It’s become the trend, hasn’t it?
In my view - this is subjective, I know - we need at least one central defender who can play ball as well. We used to have Arie Haan, Ronald Koeman, Ruud Krol, Frank de Boer, Danny Blind… Players like Bouma, Mathijsen and Ooijer do not fit in with that bunch. Michels, Cruyff and Van Gaal were quite clear: we will move a midfielder back to the back four to play that role (Koeman, Rijkaard, Blind, Haan).
Let’s look at the options for that. To me, Engelaar and Van Bommel would qualify for that role. And maybe even Hedwiges Maduro! Van Bommel may be penalty-kick prone but Engelaar seems to be the beesknees. He is tall, sees the game well, knows how to challenge a player and can play build up.
We do have strong man-markers to play next to Engelaar: Heitinga, Bouma (although he will be a tad old maybe in two years) and we also have up and comers with Marcellis, Van der Wiel, Donk and Vlaar.
These lads are young, but could progress in the next two years. Marcellis played CL football, Van der Wiel is an Ajax man so he has to be good… Donk was a huge promise recently Van Gaal said he will let Donk go. Don’t know what that’s about. And Vlaar…he seems to be the man for the job, but also seems to be more vulnerable than Robben!!
On the flanks, players like Urby Emanuelson, Gianni Zuiverloon, Jan Kromkamp and even Tim De Cler will be able to cut the mustard for us. And let’s not forget Royston Drenthe!
let’s hope, that with Drenthe, Maduro, Vlaar, Marcellis and Van der Wiel developing more and more in the next two seasons, we might have a killer back four in South Africa.
Midfield
We’re spoilt for choice in midfield aren’t we? My goodness. Here’s some players with their ages in 2010 between brackets. Sneijder (26), Van der Vaart (27), Robben (26), Van Persie (26), De Zeeuw (24), Kuyt (30), they will all be in their mid or late 20s. Afellay and Nigel de Jong will be 23 and 25 respectively. I mentioned Maduro already as a potential defender. Then there Jonathan de Guzman, Assaiti, Siem de Jong, Luigi Bruins, Stijn Schaars… Players like van Bommel and Seedorf will be well in their 30s in 2010 (33 and 34 respectively) and in modern football I don’t think they can cut it as midfielders anymore. It wouldn’t surprise me if Seedorf’s international career is over, but again, I’d love for Van Marwijk to try his son in law as a libero!
With the 4-2-3-1 still intact (which I imagine it will be), think something like:
Zuiverloon - Heitinga/Vlaar- Engelaar/Maduro - Drenthe/Emanuelson
Sneijder - Nigel De Jong/Van Bommel
Van Persie Van der Vaart/Afellay - Robben/Vaart
Obviously, depending on the progress of the players, Van Persie could also be used a the forward lone striker. I seem to have a preference for that. Ruud will be a tad old - great supersub - and Huntelaar….well…I’m just not a fan. He is a bit like Kieft and Bosman. Great finisher in a dominant team (scoring in the Eredivisie is one thing) but not a super striker like Marco, Kluivert or Ruud.
Hot damn! The future looks very good my friends!
