Dutch Debate: Eredivisie Team Of The Season
With the league calendar in Holland now taking a mid-season break, Stefan Coerts offers his Eredivisie Team of the Season so far…

Formation: 4-2-3-1
Goalkeeper
Andreas Isaksson (PSV) – The Swedish shot stopper has had his fair share of criticism since joining PSV in the summer of 2008, but he has silenced his critics with a string of outstanding performances. Isaksson has been one of the key performers at the Eindhoven side this season and his superb reflexes helped PSV through some difficult situations.
Defenders
Gregory van der Wiel (Ajax) – Van der Wiel hasn’t missed a single game so far this term and his good performances have even made him a regular in the Dutch national side. The young defender struggled against PSV, but was absolutely outstanding in the other games of the first half of the season.
Ron Vlaar (Feyenoord) –Vlaar has been his side’s top performer so far and Oranje coach Bert van Marwijk will have little choice but to take the centre-back to South Africa if he can keep up his fine form. Feyenoord had been shaky at the back in the past couple of campaigns , but the Rotterdam side have been solid as a rock at the back since Vlaar has returned to full match fitness.
Douglas (Twente) – The 21-year-old has been a breakout star in the Eredivisie this season and has ensured that Twente have the joint second best defensive record in the top flight. Douglas has been tipped for stardom, and the towering centre-back has been linked to a host of big European clubs including Wolfsburg and Ajax.
Erik Pieters (PSV) – Pieters failed to live up to expectations last season after arriving at PSV from Utrecht, but the young defender has been in great form this term. The 21-year-old is the Eindhoven side’s undisputed first choice at left-back and a spot in Holland’s World Cup squad could very well be on the horizon.
Defensive Midfielders
Demy de Zeeuw (Ajax) – De Zeeuw joined Ajax from AZ last summer and the Amsterdam side will not regret splashing the cash on the Dutch international. The midfielder has quickly developed into an important first team player and is Ajax’ true leader on the pitch. De Zeeuw has scored five goals in 17 league appearances so far and set up several others.
Wout Brama (Twente) – The holding midfielder has been instrumental in Twente’s success before the winter break. Brama is the one pulling the strings in midfield for the Tukkers and his presence allows the Twente attackers the chance to excel. The 23-year-old scored his first goal as a professional and also made his debut for Oranje in 2009.
Attacking Midfielders
Bryan Ruiz (Twente) – Ruiz was given the task to replace Austrian international Marko Arnautovic on the right wing and he has done so in superb fashion. The Costa Rican attacker has been pretty much unstoppable for Twente this season and has justified his hefty price tag with a string of silky displays. He has already scored 13 league goals for the Enschede side so far and incredibly has netted in ten successive league games, a record for Twente.
Ibrahim Afellay (PSV) – The creative midfielder has been deployed in a more defensive role this term and this has prevented him from scoring as much as he did last year. However, Afellay is proving for the fifth consecutive season that he’s one of the best midfielders around in Holland. Every single PSV attack starts at the young playmaker's feet and it appears to be inevitable that Afellay will move abroad in the not so distant future.
Balazs Dzsudzsak (PSV) – The Hungarian winger has proved his class this season with numerous assists and goals. Dzsudzsak has found the net eight times in 16 league outings and set up eight more. The left footed attacker was particularly impressive in the 4-3 win against Ajax.
Striker
Luis Suarez (Ajax) – Suarez’s goalscoring record this campaign has been nothing short of phenomenal. The Uruguayan international has netted 18 goals in just 17 games in the Eredivisie and created 11 others. With 30 strikes in all competitions, Suarez is Europe’s most prolific goalscoring machine at the halfway stage of the 2009-10 season.
