Arsenal target Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen

Reports in the Sunday papers continue to link Arsenal with a move for Ajax’s highly-rated central defender Thomas Vermaelen.
The 5.9ft centre back came through the ranks at Ajax and this season has established himself as one of the mainstays of their defence. Vermaelen played 40 games, scoring five goals, picking up eight yellow cards and one red card during the 2008/2009 campaign.
The Belgium international (19 caps) is contracted to the Amsterdam giants until the end of the 2012/2013 season and is believed to be worth around 7.5 million euros. Crucially, he speaks English, which should aid his integration into the Premier League.
IMScouting’s network of scouts in Holland describe Vermaelen as a "strong resolute defender who likes to go forward." Those who regularly watch the right-footed defender warn that he has a weakness on his left side.
