Ajax appoints Overmars as sporting director

THE HAGUE, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Former Dutch international Marc Overmars has been appointed as sporting director of Ajax soccer club, the Dutch outfit club announced on Friday.
Overmars, whose career included spells at Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona before it ended in 2004 due to a knee injury, will be in charge of the side's transfer dealings, youth academy and scouting duties.
At the end of last season, the 39-year-old quit a similar position at Dutch second division club Go Ahead Eagles Deventer, where he started his professional career in 1990-91.
In Amsterdam Overmars will be reunited with some of his former teammates such as coach Frank de Boer and his assistant Dennis Bergkamp.
"I'm really looking forward to it," he declared. "It's fun to work in a group with people you know from past." |
