Button's deal to stay at BAR
Still nothing official over Buttongate II
Jenson Button set to stay with the Fry led team
Jenson Button will reportedly be staying at Formula One team BAR beyond the end of the season after buying himself out of a deal he signed to race for Williams from 2006. The BBC and a number of British newspapers reported Tuesday that Button had agreed to pay Williams compensation running into millions of pounds for failing to honour his commitment to drive for the team next season.
Williams have split from engine provider BMW and Button apparently believes he could enjoy greater success by staying with Honda-backed BAR and racing alongside Rubens Barrichello, who has been signed from Ferrari for the 2006 season and will replace Takuma Sato.
Button started his career at Williams in 2000 and, in August 2004, signed a deal to rejoin them in time for the 2005 season. BAR however insisted he was still under contract with them and, after adjudication from Formula One's governing body FIA, Button was ordered to remain with BAR for 2005.
Button said earlier this month that his efforts to get out of driving for Williams were progressing well following amicable discussions with team boss Frank Williams.
Williams had maintained that Button would have to honour his commitments, which the team had used to conclude sponsorship agreements for 2006.
BAR, Button nor Williams has yet to make any official announcement on the deal.
