García shoulders Spanish burden
Friday, 14 July 2006

by Lucas Brownfrom Barcelona

e-mailPrint

The stakes are high for Spain as they travel to Poland seeking to lift the UEFA European Under-19 Championship trophy for the third time. Not only have two of the previous four tournaments ended in a Spanish victory, but 15 goals in three Elite round games this time around have raised expectations of a third triumph. In midfield powerhouse Javi García, they have the perfect man to justify those hopes.

Madrid bow
The combative 19-year-old plays his club football with Real Madrid CF's B team, registering four goals in 32 games in the Spanish second division last season. He even made a late UEFA Champions League appearance as a substitute for Madrid against Olympiacos CFP in December, and his international coach Ginés Meléndez believes comparisons with French pair Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele are justified.

Surging runs
García's strength in the air makes him an asset in both defence and attack, but his greatest quality is his ability to produce surging runs through the middle. "He is a very strong player, a very powerful midfielder who is also technically gifted," Meléndez told uefa.com. "He is a complete player. He has great presence, can score goals, is strong in the air and is similar in style to Patrick Vieira, although he's actually more of a cross between Vieira and Makelele."

Serious approach
Sixteen yellow and two red cards in 2005/06 showed a wild side that needs to be checked, but Meléndez is nevertheless clear on what he has to offer. "What he brings to the team is seriousness. He is very hard-working and a great ball-winner, but above all he is serious. He balances the team very well and gives the rest of the players self-belief on and off the pitch. He has spent the whole season in the second division and also played for the first team, so he has a great deal of experience and that will help him and us a lot."

Bruno Gama raises Portuguese hopes
Monday, 10 July 2006

by Hugo Pietrafrom Lisbon

e-mailPrint

A European Under-17 champion with Portugal, Bruno Alexandre Vilela Gama is one of the most experienced players of his generation. Groomed by SC Braga, the midfielder made his Portuguese Liga debut in the 2003/04 season and that solitary appearance proved enough to persuade FC Porto to acquire his services in the summer of 2004. Although he has since made just one league appearance, great things are expected of the teenager at the Estádio do Dragão.

U17 glory
The skilful 18-year-old, who can play in any position across the midfield including either wing, is one of the most capped youth internationals Portugal have produced with 16 competitive appearances at U17 level. He came to prominence in the 2003 UEFA European Under-17 Championship when, on home soil, he appeared in all five finals matches and scored one goal as the Portuguese lifted the title.

Polish task
He played every minute of Portugal's four games at the 2005 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup, scoring against Cameroon, and is set for a major role as Carlos Dinis's side challenge for the European U19 title in Poland. The Porto player proved an influential figure in qualifying. A powerful shot in both feet brought him two goals in the Elite round against Israel and F.Y.R. Macedonia, and, having captained the side twice in their six matches, Bruno Gama will be out to lead by example at the finals.

Derijck provides Belgian backing
Friday, 14 July 2006

e-mailPrint

Already reputed for his defensive steel, Belgium captain Timothy Derijck has repeatedly demonstrated an attacking mettle to match, and his versatility could be crucial to his side's chances at the 2006 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Goalscoring threat
Unaware of what was happening in the other Elite round Group 6 fixture, Belgium's bid to reach Poland looked to be ending in failure going into added time of their final game against Northern Ireland. Needing a win to secure qualification, Marc Van Geersom's team had contrived to squander a 2-0 lead when Feyenoord man Derijck rose to head in and make it 3-2. It brought a nice symmetry to the Belgians' qualifying campaign as the former RSC Anderlecht teenager had netted the first goal of their opening match seven and a half months before.

Defensive steel
In between times, Derijck did not miss a minute of action and although a tally of three goals – he notched the same figure in 2005 qualifying – hints at his attacking threat, his primary role is defending. Able to play anywhere across the back line or as a holding midfielder, the 1.85m-tall youngster not only dominates the air but also has that rare commodity in football – two strong feet. Already Derijck is demonstrating why Anderlecht fought so hard, albeit in vain, to keep him last summer.

Obvious backbone
Chances were limited at Feyenoord but a loan spell at NAC Breda brought crucial first-team experience. It means he travels to Poland with the practice to accompany his talent, and Derijck, former Anderlecht team-mates Jonathan Legear and Roland Lamah, as well as LOSC Lille Métropole's Kevin Mirallas, are likely to provide Belgium's backbone. They will need to hit the ground running as the Czech Republic await in their opening fixture.

Fenin fires Czech challenge
Thursday, 13 July 2006

by Ladislav Joseffrom Prague

e-mailPrint

Of the 108 players who will be involved at the fifth UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Poland, few if any will be as experienced as Czech Republic striker Martin Fenin. The teenager has scored 13 goals in 46 games for his country at various age levels, but the tournament in Poland will break new ground as it represents his first major finals.

'Different story'
"We had little chance to qualify in previous years, as we faced Spain with the brilliant Cesc Fabregas in the U17s in 2004 and were drawn against Germany and the Netherlands in the U19s a year later," said the FK Teplice forward, who scored against Denmark and Ukraine in the Elite round and wore the captain's armband in the decisive final qualifier against Switzerland. "It's a different story this year - we can achieve a lot."

Early debut
Fenin is no stranger to achievement, having been given his league debut by then Teplice coach František Straka in November 2004 when he was only 16 and without a single appearance for the reserves to his name. "I couldn't believe it when I went into the dressing room and there were the players I had idolised when I was a ball boy at the stadium," Fenin admitted. Those team-mates soon embraced him, particularly when he found the net in only his fifth league match. "There is a great difference - I had plenty of time in the junior side, but everything is much quicker in the top flight," he said.

'Like a dream'
Nevertheless, four goals in ten league starts represents a respectable return. The 19-year-old, whose hero is Roberto Baggio, also featured in both legs of Teplice's UEFA Intertoto Cup tie against Grasshopper-Club at the start of July, but was unable to prevent a Swiss victory. He therefore has even more reason to look forward to Poland, and initially is keen for the Czechs to finish in the top three in Group A and earn a berth in next year's FIFA U-20 World Cup. "We definitely have a great chance to get to Canada," he said. "It would be a dream to play there." For Fenin and the Czechs, though, the first thought must be to conquer Europe; the world can wait.

Janczyk out to emulate Boniek
Thursday, 13 July 2006

by Pawel Dimowfrom Krakow

e-mailPrint

There is no higher praise in Polish football than comparisons with former Juventus star Zbigniew Boniek but promising forward Dawid Janczyk has gone one better with a glowing endorsement from the man himself. Now he must live up to the acclaim and having spent the end of the 2005/06 season on the sidelines, the 18-year-old is determined to impress for Poland at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Cruel timing
It could have been very different had Janczyk not been injured during a league match against MKS Cracovia SSA in March just days after receiving his first senior international call-up. It was cruel timing and left the Legia Warszawa man sidelined for seven weeks, ending any lingering hopes he may have had of winning a place in Paweł Janas' FIFA World Cup squad. Janczyk, who had trials with Chelsea FC before joining Legia in summer 2005, will get his chance to shine on the international stage, however, and much of Poland's hopes rest on his reliable shoulders.

Boniek buoyed
The Nowy Sacz-born youngster took just two minutes to score in Poland's 3-0 friendly victory against Latvia in June and although he was forced off with a niggling injury midway through the first half, it proved another reminder of a burgeoning talent. That ability has drawn parallels with the great Boniek, who himself approved the comparisons by saying: "I'm watching his performances with great pleasure. Janczyk has everything to enjoy a successful career."

Groundbreaking season
"I would like to have a career like Boniek," is Janczyk's standard response to the plaudits but he is already scribing his own name into the annals of Polish football. His opening goal of the 2005/06 season meant he became the second youngest Legia player to score in a first-team game. A subsequent strike in November made him Legia's third youngest league goalscorer of all time. Perform well in the European U19 Championship this summer and he could yet add an entry that eluded even Boniek – national-team silverware.

Turkey's İlhan sets striking example
Thursday, 6 July 2006

by Türker Tozarfrom Trabzon

e-mailPrint

A strong side makes Turkey contenders at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship although it is the cutting edge provided by İlhan Parlak that could prove the difference in Poland.

Elite excellence
The 19-year-old Kayserispor forward was largely a peripheral figure in the qualifying round, playing only 101 minutes despite featuring in all three of Turkey's matches. He burst into life in the Elite round, however, scoring twice against both Georgia and – decisively – Slovakia and also netting against the Republic of Ireland to help his country into the finals. His adept finishing and skilful all-round play with his club's U19 team had previously caught the eye, and his displays in Slovakia showed he could cut it at international level.

Quickfire strike
İlhan had already made his mark in the Turkish Superleague with the fastest goal in the top flight since 1959 on 30 April 2006. The teenager struck after just 15 seconds of Kayserispor's game at Sivasspor, setting his side on the way to a 5-0 victory and serving notice of his considerable talent. He registered in his next league match as well, a 7-2 defeat of Vestel Manisaspor, although those were the only goals yielded by his 18 league appearances, including nine starts.

Turkish strength
Nor is İlhan Turkey's sole rising star. The consistently improving displays of right-back Serdar Kurtuluş have earned a move to Istanbul giants Beşiktaş JK, which is sure to give a significant boost to the player on the eve of the tournament. İlhan's strike partner Caner Erkin was a target for several clubs before opting to stay with Manisaspor while the energy of midfielder Serdar Özkan will be crucial. Turkey have every reason to be optimistic.

Like the EPL guys...

We talk about our teams in our forums, but this could work to discuss what you think about the other teams during the pre-season.

Barcelona - The same team, minus Larsson plus Gudjohnsen. The team is done, so the positive side is that they know each other perfectly. Even some people said that the WC could have been positive for us, since our stars didn't shine there and they can go back willing to show that they're still the best. My main fear is that the team get relaxed after the success of the last 2 years in all the levels.

Real Madrid - Under construction. Now they have Capello and Calderón will give a pillow to all the socios of the Bernabeu to sleep a siesta during the games, but I think that the team won't collapse this time. I don't know if they'll win or not, I don't care who they bring, whoever they have Capello always build a solid team. Only because of him, I respect them more this year.

Valencia - Carboni is not being very efficient this summer. So far, they just bought Morientes and recovered some of their talented kids that were on loan last year. But I don't think it's enough. If they don't make an effort, I don't think that they can fight for anything... but I guess they'll do it soon.

Osasuna - Aguirre gone. Few signings. I don't see them repeating the success of last year. They'll play the CL, which is always a problem for this kind of teams. They must take care next year.

Sevilla - A solid team, reinforced with some good signings. Maybe they'll lose Alves, but I don't think that the team will collapse because of this, since the key was the team, not the individualities. Besides, with the money they'll get, Del Nido can give a surprise to the sevillistas. Not a team to fight for the title, but I see them in the top positions once more.

Celta - They keep the base of last year. Nothing changes. Let's see if they can repeat the same results too. I'm not that positive, because other direct rivals improved.

Villarreal - The same team plus some good players. Like Sevilla, I don't think they can win La Liga, but they should fight to go back to the CL and maybe for the UEFA Cup title.

Deportivo - Average signings, players leaving... Deportivo isn't Super anymore. Mid table for me.

Getafe - Smart club which follows the same politics, loaning hungry kids from the big teams. They should remain in Primera.

Atlético - Tough question. Important signings... like always. This time they should get to Europe, even fighting for a CL place if the things go right. But you never know with these people.

Zaragoza - They lost Cani, kept the forwards and added some players. Depending on the addition of the signings, we'll see if they can fight for Europe or just stay in the mid table.

Athletic - They should take care. The base is the same, but the institutional unstability won't help at all. But you never know, they're able of the best and the worst. Mid table.

Mallorca - As always, if they save the season, they'd have done a good year. Fighting to avoid relegation, I guess.

Betis - Irureta is an important coach. It should work to start a promising project, although their players aren't very important. They should fight for the UEFA Cup spot though.

Espanyol - New coach. They lose an important player like Lopo. I guess that they'll have to fight to avoid relegation again.

Real Sociedad - They've made a lot of signings that aren't big names and lost important people like Nihat, De Paula and Mark Gonzalez. No money in the bank, but a team with pride and history. To fight for salvation again.

Racing - The same irrelevant team of always. Fight to avoid relegation.

Recreativo - They've loaned some players of Villarreal, but their only goal should be to stay in Primera.

Nàstic - They better sign people, if not their season can be too long.

Levante - They've bought some important people of Segunda and some foreigners in their last years. They'll suffer too.

Still... a long summer and this can change.
