Spain can reign, insists Cesc

       
Cesc Fabregas believes Spain may finally be ready to shake off their 'underachievers' tag after a successful start to their World Cup campaign.

Spain are one of just four teams to have won all three of their World Cup games so far, while the squad is full of stars who play in the most competitive leagues in the world, including the domestic Primera Liga.

Fabregas himself plays for English side Arsenal, but is on the verge of stardom after his dynamic performances helped the Gunners reach the Champions League final last season.

And, much to the relief of coach Luis Aragones, Fabregas will be available to play against France in their last-16 clash next week after avoiding a second booking in Spain's 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Friday.

"I am happy that I can play in the next game," said Fabregas. "I had to be careful, I couldn't make certain tackles or fall on the pitch as a precaution to avoid getting a yellow card.

"I think I wasn't able to play my game because it affected my performance.

"But the important thing is that we have won and now we can turn our attention to our second-round clash."

Fabregas was not in the starting line-up for Spain's first two wins over Ukraine and Tunisia, but he was the inspiration in their 3-1 triumph over the Africans after coming off the bench at the beginning of the second half.

And the Arsenal star is confident his team-mates can keep that success going when they face the French in Hanover on Tuesday.

"I hope that I continue to have playing time," said the 19-year-old. "As long as we keep the same mentality we can go all the way in this tournament. We can go as far as we want to."

Aragones would have expected to come up against either Switzerland or South Korea - the side that beat them in the quarter-finals at the last World Cup - in the knockout stages, but Les Bleus were the slightly-surprising runners-up in Group G.

Their squad is also loaded with talent and it promises to be a very difficult game for both sides, according to the Spain coach.

"France have a great team," said Aragones. "I think whoever controls possession in that game will end up winning and I believe we are superior to France in this."

France midfielder Florent Malouda admits Les Bleus are relieved to be in the knockout phase of the World Cup - but insists the team can now take on a new dimension for the last 16 match against Spain

Malouda, at 26 young by the standards of an ageing France side, has started the Group G matches with South Korea and Togo - a match where France got the 2-0 win they needed to reach the last 16.

Speaking after that match, Malouda said: 'I am delighted the team managed to get into the next round and it's good to get there.

'We feel much better now and we know we can do better still.

'Now we hope to forget the group phase and look forward to a new start.'

Malouda, who plays his club football for French champions Lyon, admitted Spain had made an impressive start to their campaign.

'We have to regroup for the Spain game now,' said Malouda. 'We have already spoken about it.

'We will have to be lucid when we are in their half and make sure we take our chances.'

They (Spain) have started the tournament very well and we will have to try to stop them from playing. I hope we manage to do that.'

Suspended pair Zinedine Zidane and Eric Abidal will return for the match with the Spain side which is coached by Luis Aragones who early in his tenure as Spain boss made insulting remarks about France striker Thierry Henry.

Abidal looks certain to replace Mikael Silvestre at left-back and while Zidane seems certain to return, coach Raymond Domenech must decide how to set up his team after Patrick Vieira excelled in the playmaking role against Togo.

Vieira scored the opener and made the second for Thierry Henry in a match France had to win by two clear goals to be sure of progressing to the last 16 and what proved to be a match in Hanover with Spain.

Though conditions in Germany appear to have sapped much of Zidane's energy, Sagnol is confident his veteran team-mate will rise to the challenge.
"Zizou will be ready for Spain, believe me. He knows he's fit and he knows we are all confident we can win.
"His motivation for this match, as ever, will be extremely high."We have not reached our maximum yet. We all realise that the way we played against the Swiss or the Koreans will not be good enough against the Spaniards.
"We need to improve if we are to go further and we are all confident we can. Of course, this is a test, but we are ready for it."
