EFFENBERG NOT SO KEEN ON VAN BOMMEL
Former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg believes his old club have made a mistake in signing Mark van Bommel
from Barcelona.
Effenberg was regarded as the driving force behind the Bayern side which won the Champions League in 2001 and since he left one year
later, the club have struggled in Europe.
The hunt for a new leader ended when Michael Ballack joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2002, but despite success in the Bundesliga, he
was unable to bring the Champions League back to Munich.
A more combative player in the mould of Effenberg has been coach Felix Magath's wish since Ballack moved to Chelsea and he believes
he has got his man in van Bommel.
Effenberg, though, maintains the search for his replacement must go on.
"He doesn't stand out from the team and he will not be able to fulfil a role as an absolute leader," he told the Bild newspaper.
"Big clubs need a big leader and, in this respect, Bayern do not have one."
In fact, Effenberg believes Bayern are on their way to losing their undisputed role as Germany's top side.
He said: "Werder Bremen in particular are employing a good transfer policy and I can imagine them overtaking Bayern on the European
stage shortly.
"Bremen could even win the Bundesliga." |
