Newcastle United receive bids of ￡100m for club
DEREK LLAMBIAS has revealed that“more than two bids at ￡100m” have been received for crisis club Newcastle United.
The Toon managing director was spotted showing a Malaysian consortium around St James’s Park and the United training HQ last Thursday.
But he remained tight-tipped on the identity of the bidders, with Newcastle and the clutch of interested parties wary of the non-disclosure agreements they signed since the club went up for sale.
With the first-team squad now in Dublin at a boot camp, the club contacted the Chronicle today to say that the sale was still “ongoing”, with investment bankers Seymour Pierce in charge of finding a new owner for the Magpies.
The Malaysians were mooted to have discussed a bid in excess of ￡80m in addition to tackling the overdraft at United, thought to be ￡34m.
But Llambias has insisted that the price was never going to be less than ￡100m.
And he told the Chronicle today: “There have been more than two bids at ￡100m.
“At the moment we are in the hands of lawyers and it is all ongoing.
“We are giving interested parties allthe help that they need.”
Another group that appeared to go off the radar after emerging as the first to express an interest are the Singapore-based Profitable Group.
Llambias has always been sceptical about the strategic global investment group and initially denied their claims that they wanted to buy the group.
But Profitable hit back on their website on June 10, claiming that they were in discussions with Seymour Pierce over the sale.
The talk in the capital today was that the group, who have former England man Steve McMahon on board, had put in a bid on Friday.
But this claim was dismissed by the club today.

New owners will be unveiled this week
NEWCASTLE United supporters should know the identity of the club's new owners by the end of the week as the bank in charge of the sale prepares to make a recommendation on which bid to accept.
Seymour Pierce, who were asked to find a buyer by owner Mike Ashley last month, have now received four bids for the club, with at least two of them matching the ￡100m asking price.
Those offers are now being analysed in detail with, Keith Harris, the chairman of Seymour Pierce, looking to determine which represents the best deal for both Ashley and the club.
Although all of the interested parties have shown they have the funds necessary to go through with the deal, The Journal understands one of the groups has significantly more financial muscle than the rest.
As a result, they are thought to have the best hope of lifting the Magpies back into the Premier League at the first attempt by providing money to be spent in the transfer market as well as on stabilising the club’s debt following relegation.
However, that is not the only relevant factor, with the structure of the deal also being looked at in terms of how quickly Ashley will receive his money and how quickly the new owners will be in place and able to appoint a new manager. Alan Shearer will almost certainly be given the job.
The former Magpies skipper has been in discreet contact with at least two of the bidding parties and is now waiting for a final breakthrough to be made.
Shearer has also been able to have some say in the team’s pre-season preparations. The first-team squad is currently in Ireland ahead of a friendly against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday, with caretaker boss Chris Hughton putting them through a harsh fitness programme designed by Shearer at the end of last season.
This includes three training sessions a day at their base in Carton House, Kildare, with the first starting at 7am, a sign Shearer was determined to stamp his authority on the players before the frustrating delay in his appointment.
It had been initially thought Newcastle were struggling to find a buyer willing to meet the asking price as a result of the crippling state of the club’s finances.
However, after a brief period of bargaining which has delayed the takeover by a few days, managing director Derek Llambias is confident a formal announcement will be made fairly quickly.
He said: “There have been more than two bids at ￡100m. At the moment we are in the hands of the lawyers and it is all ongoing. We are giving interested parties
all the help that they need.” Although non-disclosure agreements prevent any of the bidders revealing their identity, sources close to the deal have claimed an American and a South African group are the front runners, as well as the Malaysians who visited the club’s Darsley Park training ground last week.

Newcastle are bracing themselves for a player revolt unless Alan Shearer is appointed manager in the next fortnight.
As the sale of the club drags in to a third month, senior players at the club have reacted angrily to the apparent lethargy and lack of urgency behind the scenes.
Geordie Steven Taylor is among those believed to be demanding that Shearer is appointed as the club's permanent boss immediately.
Sportsmail understands he leads a group of several players including Nicky Butt, Alan Smith and Habib Beye who have threatened to put in transfer requests unless there is movement on the managerial front at St James' Park.
French defender Sebastien Bassong is even on the verge of handing in his request on Monday when the team return from a pre-season camp in Dublin.
That will immediately alert Arsenal, Sunderland and Tottenham, who monitored his impressive debut season in England following a £500,000 move from Metz 12 months ago.
The difficulty for owner Mike Ashley, who has appointed former Football League chairman Keith Harris to deal with the £100 million sale of the club, is that he does not want to appoint Shearer before completing the sale.
The billionaire owner believes imposing a new manager on his successors would be unfair, and similar to the situation he inherited with Sam Allardyce two years ago.
Caretaker boss Chris Hughton is currently taking the squad through its paces in Ireland, ahead of the first pre-season friendly against Shamrock Rovers in Dublin on Saturday.
But while the former Spurs No 2 remains a likeable and efficient understudy, the squad are looking for the sort of guidance Shearer gave them for his brief two months in charge at the end of last season.
Managing director Derek Llambias said yesterday he had received 'more than two' bids for the troubled club.
But while they may meet Ashley's asking price, they are still some way from completing the complicated legal formalities which will enable them to wrestle the club from Ashley's clutches, and appoint Shearer as the manager.

Leeds United: Becks tempted by Toon

Jermaine Beckford's agent hasn't ruled out the transfer-listed Leeds United striker heading to Newcastle, despite the ongoing takeover saga at the club.
The prolific marksman's future is yet to be resolved, with the Geordies linked with the 25-year-old earlier this summer.
Agent Nick Rubery expects something positive over his future to happen shortly.
He said: "It wouldn't be true to say Newcastle have missed out on Jermaine because of what is going on there.
"There has been interest from other clubs and I would anticipate something happening soon – maybe in the next couple of weeks when the transfer market begins to start hotting up.
"But it is certainly true Newcastle is still a seriously attractive option for Jermaine. They are a big club, with a fantastic tradition and history and any player would love to play at St James's Park. I'm sure he would talk to whoever takes over at Newcastle when it is sorted out."

Profitable Group admit making bid for NUFC
THE PROFITABLE Group have become the first would-be buyers to openly admit they have made a bid for Newcastle United.
And the Singapore-based investment company say they expect to discover this weekend whether their offer, which they made last week and claim would be "great for Newcastle", has been accepted.
Former England star Steve McMahon, the commercial director of the Profitable Group, is the man who has broken the silence surrounding the Toon takeover saga.
Despite all bidders for United having supposedly signed non- disclosure agreements, McMahon today went on the record with the Profitable Group’s approach.
"We’ve had a bid, it’s under serious consideration," McMahon told Singapore-based newspaper, the Straits Times.
"It’s a strategic move and it’ll be great for the group and for Newcastle."
It is not known whether the Profitable Group’s bid is one of the two offers said to have matched Mike Ashley’s ￡100m valuation of the Magpies.
And while United managing director Derek Llambias has poured cold water on Profitable’s bid, McMahon is clearly confident of success, adding: "The value (of buying the club) is awareness.
"We can turn what is a disaster at the moment into a success.
"By the end of the week, we'll know if we’re successful or not."
The Chronicle were the first to reveal the Profitable’s interest in United way back on June 9.
And the good news for Alan Shearer, whose future remains up in the air almost seven weeks on from the end of last season, is that McMahon and Co want him as manager at St James’s Park.
Newcastle are the subject of rival Far East interest in the shape an as-yet unidentified Malaysian consortium, whose tour of the club’s facilities last week is thought to have prompted Profitable’s bid, while former chairman Freddy Shepherd has also made an offer.
And an American group – also still anonymous – were also shown round United’s facilities last week and may yet enter the bidding.
Despite McMahon’s comments, the ownership issue looks set to drag on into next week, with Seymour Pierce, the investment bank tasked with brokering a deal, yet to recommend a preferred bidder to Ashley.
