Skysports.com can reveal that Wigan have identified Viking star Brede
Hangeland as a potential recruit ahead of the new season.
The Latics are desperate to add to their squad ahead of their inaugural
season in England's top flight, despite boss Paul Jewell already bringing in
six new faces over the summer.
Wigan supremo Dave Whelan has made substantial funds available to Jewell as
he looks to bankroll Wigan's survival campaign, and revealed he was
travelling with his manager to take in a game in Norway on Monday.
The pair attended Viking's 1-1 draw with Start to run the rule over the
American-born midfielder who nearly joined Everton last summer.
The 24-year-old has international experience and has long been touted as a

Hangeland has admitted that a move to The JJB Stadium could prove tempting,
as he looks to secure a move to one of Europe's more competitive leagues
following his failed move to Goodison Park 12 months ago.
"Wigan is exciting." Hangeland told Nettavisen.
"I know there is interest from abroad, but I do not know if Wigan were
watching me.
"But I am hoping it was me they watched and that they were pleased with my
display.
"I thought it would work out with Everton, but it failed at the last moment.
"But I feel I am mature enough to prove myself abroad now. I have played at
the top level for five years and feel I can perform on a higher level.
"I believe I can adapt to the playing style, regardless if the offer comes
from France or England."

Malmö FF defender Patrik Andersson may be looking at retirement after suffering a cruciate ligament injury last night.
Nasty twist
The veteran, capped 96 times by Sweden, is undergoing surgery today after falling awkwardly and twisting his left knee in the 88th minute of Malmö's 1-0 home defeat by Swiss side FC Thun in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. Recovery time is estimated at seven months.
Serious injury
"I knew straight away when I fell that it was serious," said the former Blackburn Rovers FC, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Bayern München and FC Barcelona centre-back, who will get married and turn 34 in a week's time. "The pain that I felt made me realise it was a major injury."
Unstable knee
Malmö doctor Håkan Lindberg confirmed the gravity of the situation, saying: "His knee is very unstable. We've concluded that he has torn the ligaments inside his knee, but in the worst-case scenario, the cruciate ligaments in the left knee are torn."
Game over?
Andersson endured his share of injuries during a two-year spell with Barcelona and last season, his first back at Malmö where he started his career, was also interrupted by a persistent fitness problem. He fought back to recover from that ailment, but this time appears to have sustained a much more troublesome injury.

在欧洲冠军联赛资格赛第三轮第一回合的比赛中瑞典超级联赛冠军Malmö主场0比1不敌做客的Thun. 在比赛进行到上半场第34分钟的时候，场面上一直处于被动的Thun利用一次快速反击攻破Asper把守的大门，球队新赛季从巴西联赛引进的前锋Adriano Pimenta在接到Andreas Gerber的传球后起左脚远射，球从两名后卫中间穿过Malmö门将Asper的手间滑进了球门。Adriano Pimenta的这脚在禁区外的射门力量并不是很大，Asper在倒地侧扑后错误的选择了双手抓球最终导致了这粒失球。领先后的Thun打起了他们在此前一轮预选赛和Dynamo Kyiv比赛中管用的防守反击战术。三名瑞典国脚Osmanovski，A. Andersson，D. Andersson以及球队为参加本赛季的欧冠比赛高薪引进的芬兰冰刀Litmanen组成的中常表现出了强大的控制力，Malmö牢牢的把Thun压制自己的半场内，也为本场比赛中出现在Malmö锋线上的19岁小将Marcus Pode创造了数次破门良机，可惜年轻的Marcus Pode毕竟还是显得有些稚嫩，两次和Thun守门员Jakupovic一对一的单刀机会一次犹豫中踢到了Jakupovic的身上，另外一次射门则是被球门的立柱拒绝。 (:icon092:)进入下半场后Malmö在瑞超联赛最佳球员Afonso Alves和老将Litmanen的调度下依然用强大的攻势压制着Thun，Afonso Alves在比赛中曾经有过一次射门已经整体越过了球门线后被Thun后卫解围，可是本场比赛的西班牙主裁判Ibanez并没理会Malmö全队上下的申诉。在比赛的最后时刻Malmö的队长P.Andersson在争抢头球落地时膝关节旧伤复发被救护车立即送往当地医院救治。(傷七個月..:icon100:)
比赛结束后，针对Asper在比赛中出现的重大失误，瑞典晚报进行了组图分析并对他的能力提出了强烈的质疑，事实上这已经不是Asper第一次在比赛中出现类似失误了。 (今季都打得幾差下..:o)Malmö在上赛季冠军争夺最激烈的时刻对阵保级队兰斯甘拿，本赛季做客面对升班马赫根，球队均是因类似的原因0比1告负。比这更不幸的恐怕就是球队的后防核心P.Andersson的受伤，根据瑞典快讯的对Malmö主教练Prahl的采访，P.Andersson将会在今后两个月的时间内因伤无法出场参赛, Malmö在本赛季已经不仅一次受到了球员伤病的打击，此前球队的主力中锋Skoog已经因为十字韧带撕裂告别了本赛季，本场比赛前球队的后卫Olsson和新近引进的前锋Jesper Bech也都因为伤病的原因缺席比赛。

Malmö FF's former Swedish international defender Patrik Andersson has announced his retirement after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.
Serious injury
The 33-year-old, capped 96 times by Sweden, fell awkwardly and twisted his left knee in the 88th minute of Malmö's 1-0 home defeat by Swiss side FC Thun in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first leg. He underwent surgery the following day - which would have entailed a seven-month spell on the sidelines - but decided against returning to action.
Health priority
"An ending is never predictable, and it often doesn't happen the way you had imagined," said Andersson, who is to marry this week. "Now my body has said no. I can't do it anymore, which makes the ending more definite, but the decision easier. You have to listen to your body, because you'll have it with you your whole life."
Illustrious career
Andersson began his career in Sweden with Bjärreds IF before joining Malmö in 1988. He spent two seasons at Blackburn Rovers FC from 1992 and then moved to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he enjoyed six seasons and was entrusted with the captain's armband. FC Bayern München came calling in 1999, and he was part of the side that defeated Valencia CF to lift the UEFA Champions League in 2001.
Swedish homecoming
The centre-back joined FC Barcelona the following season but his three-year spell was plagued by injury and he re-joined Malmö ahead of the 2004 campaign. Andersson was also part of the Swedish squad which finished third at the 1994 FIFA World Cup finals.
