GLASGOW, July 13 (Reuters) - Celtic, frustrated in their attempt to buy Southampton's Antti Niemi, have signed Polish international goalkeeper Artur Boruc on a one-year loan deal from Legia Warsaw.
Manager Gordon Strachan said his failure to bring Niemi back to Scotland, where he previously played for Rangers and Hearts, was down to differing valuations of the Finnish goalkeeper.
'The bottom line was our budget couldn't stretch,' Strachan, who managed Niemi at Southampton, told Scottish newspaper the Daily Record.
Niemi, valued at 2.0 million pounds ($3.54 million) by his English club, was philosophical about the move falling through.
'I am not too disappointed, that's football,' the 33-year-old, in Scotland for Southampton's pre-season friendly at Motherwell, told Reuters on Tuesday.
'I was not really expecting anything because the clubs had been talking for a while.
'Coming back to Scotland would have been tempting, but it never got to the point where I could decide.
'Strachan has made it clear they could not agree a fee.'
Boruc is to join up with his new team mates at their training camp in Burnham Beeches, England, later on Wednesday.

Kahlenberg makes Auxerre move

Denmark midfield player Thomas Kahlenberg has signed a four-year deal with French UEFA Cup hopefuls AJ Auxerre.
Brøndby blow
The 22-year-old, who has three international caps, leaves Brøndby IF just two weeks before the Danish champions enter the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. The attack-minded youngster will instead seek to feature in the UEFA Cup first round with French Cup winners Auxerre.
Kalou departure
Kahlenberg scored 28 goals in 130 games for Brøndby, and Auxerre's former France coach Jacques Santini will hope he can fill the void left by the departure of Bonaventure Kalou for Paris Saint-Germain FC.
