Magpies close on Depor star
Newcastle are understood to have agreed terms with Spain international striker Albert Luque.
Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd flew to Spain on Thursday in a bid to thrash out a deal with Luque's club Deportivo La Coruna.
Agreement between the two clubs is close to being reached while Newcastle have already settled terms with the player on a five-year contract.
Toon boss Graeme Souness has been desperately chasing a big-name striker all summer and has been linked with a host of names including Nicolas Anelka, Michael Owen, Luis Boa Morte, Mark Viduka and Fredi Kanoute.
The Scot has been unsuccessful in his attempts to lure any of those targets to St James' Park, but now appears close to landing 27-year-old Luque.
The Catalan hit-man has been repeatedly linked with a move from Depor this summer with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla all having expressed an interest in him.
Indeed, the constant speculation surrounding his future has soured his relationship with Depor fans who actually jeered him during the club's InterToto Cup campaign this summer.
It was in that competition that Souness got a first-hand look at the player as he started both legs of the Spaniards' 4-2 aggregate win at the semi-final stage.
Pacey, powerful and direct, the left-sided front man clearly impressed the Newcastle boss who has now instructed Shepherd to finalise a deal before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
It seems almost certain that will be the case with The Magpies reportedly having tabled an opening bid of around €14 million (9 million) which is just short of Depor's valuation of €15 million.
With the player himself having given the green light to the move it should be a matter of time before a deal between the two clubs is confirmed and Souness will be delighted to have finally added the firepower to his squad he has been craving.

United Feeling Luque?
NEWCASTLE United chairman Freddy Shepherd today confirmed the club had made an offer for Deportivo La Coruna star Alberto Luque.
The 27-year-old featured in both legs of the recent Intertoto Cup semi-final between the two sides, which the La Liga outfit won 4-2 on aggregate.
Mr Shepherd confirmed to nufc.co.uk: "We have made an offer to Deportivo La Coruna for Alberto Luque.
"We are now waiting for their response which may or may not lead to the player coming to Newcastle."
Luque, a Spanish international, joined Deportivo at the start of the 2002/03 season from Real Mallorca, having scored 14 goals in 36 appearances for his first club.
To date, he has netted 26 times for Deportivo from 59 starts and 42 substitute appearances.
Against United, he started the first leg of the Intertoto semi-final, playing 62 minutes. He began the return encounter on the bench at St. James' Park, replacing Diego Tristan after 55 minutes.
Meanwhile, Portuguese midfielder Hugo Viana reported back to training on Tyneside today after failing to agree a loan move to either Sporting Lisbon or Celta Vigo in recent weeks.

Souness admits defeat in Luque chase
Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has admitted his bid to bring Deportivo La Coruna striker Albert Luque to Tyneside has fallen through.
Magpies officials travelled to Spain to discuss a £7.5million transfer for the 27-year-old as their search for attacking reinforcements intensified with the closure of the transfer window looming.
However, despite going much of the way towards agreeing a deal, the negotiations could not be concluded and the party returned to the north-east empty-handed again after also failing to make progress with Fenerbahce's Nicolas Anelka earlier in the week.
'We have had a week where we have tried to sign a couple of quality players and it has not happened,' Souness said. 'But we have still a bit of time left in the transfer window.
'The two players we have gone after this week are top players and that is the only kind of player I am interested in bringing to this club.'
Anelka, Michael Owen, Fredi Kanoute, Mark Viduka and Robbie Keane among others have attracted interest from the Magpies this summer, but with Newcastle's need well-known, prices have proved prohibitive.
The search will continue but Souness refused to say whether any of the moves could be resurrected.
'We are in the market for players,' he said. 'Whether they remain targets or not I think we should keep to ourselves.'
