United to get Luque
Chairman Freddy Shepherd burned the midnight oil last night as Newcastle United moved closer to completing the signing of Albert Luque from Deportivo La Coruna.
And the news from Spain's influential newspaper Marca today was that the two clubs were "very close" to an agreement for the 27-year-old Spanish international who says he would love to line up alongside Alan Shearer in a black-and-white shirt.
Indeed, my information is that United's offer on the table at the Riazor Stadium is 7.5m, just 500,000 short of La Coruna's valuation of their prize asset.
And United know that once they can agree a fee with La Coruna then Luque already has his bags packed ready to fly to Newcastle.
For the Chronicle can reveal that Luque has already told United he is happy with the financial terms they have offered him and he is ready to sign a five-year contract at St James' Park.
Luque has also informed them that one of the reasons he wants to join United is so he can line up alongside Shearer in the legendary skipper's last season in United's No 9 shirt.
Luque said: "English football is excellent and I have no doubt that I could play in the Premiership. My character will suit English football and the supporters will be happy with my style and the goals I would score."
United have heard from Spain that La Coruna are close to finding a replacement for Luque and certainly the feeling at St James' Park is that they can have everything tied up early next week.
This would then leave them with a bit of a rush job to get Luque's international clearance so that he could go into the squad for Wednesday's game with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.
Ironically, that game was put back 24 hours from the Tuesday because Bolton are in Premiership action tomorrow and this may actually benefit United as far as Luque is concerned.
If the Luque deal does go through, it will be a huge relief to United after they missed out on Luis Boa Morte, Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen.
United officials realise their fans have been disappointed that a quality striker has not been signed, something that was shown by the fact that the attendance was expected to be marginally short of capacity for today's game with West Ham at St James' Park - and that there is still a small number of season tickets for sale.

Luque hoping to complete Newcastle move
MADRID (Reuters) - Deportivo Coruna forward Albert Luque is hopeful that his club will give the go-ahead for him to join Premier League side Newcastle United.
"I don't understand why Deportivo don't let me go if Newcastle are prepared to offer 15 million euros (10.2 million pounds)," the Spanish international told a news conference on Saturday.
"The original idea was that I should be presented by the club (Newcastle) today, but that is now going to be difficult because the (Deportivo) president (Augusto Cesar Lendoiro) isn't one to get up early.
"It is an interesting opportunity for me, but I'm still a Deportivo player and it is the president who has the last word. If I end up staying here I will have no problem with that and I will continue working with the same enthusiasm I've always had."
Deportivo coach Joaquin Caparros said he believed the club should sell the player if Newcastle made a big enough offer.
"Although Luque does feature in my plans I would understand if the club decided to sell him if they got a good offer because we are in a delicate financial position at the moment," Caparros was quoted as saying in sports daily El Mundo Deportivo.
Luque joined Deportivo from Real Mallorca in 2002 for 15 million euros after scoring 14 goals in the previous season and has been a regular in the first team ever since. He was the Galician side's top scorer with 11 goals last season.
Representatives from Newcastle have been in La Coruna this week trying to sign the 27-year-old, but although local media reported that they had agreed personal terms with the player no deal has yet been reached between the two clubs.
Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd told the club's website: "We have had talks with Deportivo and those talks are still ongoing," he said.
Newcastle have been searching for a new forward to add support to Alan Shearer up front.

GRAEME Souness is confident of signing Deportivo La Courna striker Albert Luque after revealing an agreement for the Spanish star is close.
The Newcastle United boss is eager to boost his squad's firepower after their opening Premiership home game of the 2005/06 season ended in a goalless stalemate with 10-man West Ham United.
Speaking to Newcastle World TV after the game, the manager said of the 27-year-old: "We've agreed, as I understand, a deal with Luque himself and are not far away from agreeing something with the club."

"First they (Newcastle) should have reached an agreement with Deportivo and then with the player.

Luque left out
Albert Luque seems a step closer to Newcastle after being left out of Deportivo La Coruna's Intertoto Cup final against Marseille.
The Spanish striker is inching towards a switch to St James' Park, with Graeme Souness revealing that they had already agreed personal terms with the player.
However, an agreement between the two clubs over a fee was still proving hard to come by.
The Magpies are desperate for offensive reinforcements and it seems as though they are closer to landing Luque after he was left out of Deportivo's next game.
Manager Joaquin Caparros has left Luque out of the club's second leg of the Intertoto Cup final against Marseille.
"The situation today is that we will not count on Luque for this important match," said Caparros.
Luque's father Rafael says that the clubs are close to agreeing on a fee for Luque who will soon be on his way to Tyneside.
"The accord between the two clubs is imminent," said Rafael Luque.
"Luque and Newcastle have already closed on an accord."
Deportivo president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro says that the deal has still not been completed but negotiations are ongoing and it now seems merely just a matter of time.
