Newcastle United have failed in a late 7m bid to get Spanish international Albert Luque into their side for tomorrow's game with West Ham at St James' Park.
But United are still hoping that they can do a deal with their Intertoto Cup conquerors Deportivo La Coruna by the time they go to Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday night.
Chairman Freddy Shepherd offered the Spanish outfit e10m for the 27-year-old striker who can play right across the front line.
Not only did the deal look on, but Luque was on the verge of flying to Newcastle last night and United were looking at ways in which they could have speeded up his international clearance to allow Graeme Souness to at least put him on the bench tomorrow.
But Luque did not board the plane after United found that Deportivo were still haggling over the price and the deal will have to be put on ice until after the weekend.
Not surprisingly, Souness was left frustrated when another transfer failed to materialise, with the manager saying: "I will not sign a player just for the sake of signing him, and soon I will have to draw a line on transfers and make do with what we've got."
In the meantime, Souness and United will have to keep a wary eye on Barcelona, who are keen to add Luque to their already impressive squad.
United will be particularly disappointed if they do not get Luque because I understand the striker, who has also played for Real Mallorca and Malaga, was their top target.
United have checked him out, and they found out that not only is he a top player but he is looked upon in Spain as the model professional.
Luque played for the first hour against United in La Coruna and he came on as a 55th-minute substitute in the second leg at St James' Park.
My information is that while Deportivo went on to beat Marseille 2-0 in the Intertoto Cup final first leg and are favourites to go through to the UEFA Cup, they are strapped for cash.
This, and the player's desire to come to St James' Park, give United hope that they can do a deal next week for Luque.
But while United admit to having had talks regarding Nicolas Anelka this week, they have denied that they tried to hijack Fredi Kanoute's £6m transfer from Spurs to Sevilla.
I am told that in talks with Fenerbahce in Belgium this week, United offered the Turks 8m for Anelka but that they were asked for e14m - nearly 10m.
And the player's demands before he would come to St James' were "excessive".

Depor say Luque talks ongoing
Deportivo La Coruna believe a deal can still be struck to take Spanish international Albert Luque to Newcastle United.
Magpies boss Graeme Souness revealed on Friday morning Newcastle had failed to prise the 27-year-old striker away in a proposed £7.5million deal, but Deportivo spokesman Rafael Carpacho told PA Sport: "There are talks about Luque, but at the moment they have not reached fruition.
"The situation could change."
Souness said at his press conference he still hopes to make new signings.
"We have had a week where we have tried to sign a couple of quality players and it has not happened," Souness said.
"But we have still a bit of time left in the transfer window.
"We are in the market for players. Whether they remain targets or not I think we should keep to ourselves."
