Hong Kong's Fan frustrates Uzbeks

HONG KONG - Hong Kong and Uzbekistan once again shared the spoils in the Asian Cup Group F qualifying stage as the hosts frustrated their Central Asian counterparts in a goalless draw at the Hong Kong Stadium on Wednesday evening.
In two encounters that could quite feasibly have yielded six points for the Uzbeks, Valeri Nepomniatchi’s side have taken just two and this time it was thanks to the magnificent display of goalkeeper Fan Chun Yip - who produced countless superb saves to deny the visitors.
And to make matters worse for Uzbekistan they were reduced to 10-men when Alexey Nikolaev was dismissed late on.
The hosts went into the game knowing that a victory would leave them within touching distance of qualifying for the Asian Cup for the first time since 1968.
Uzbekistan, meanwhile, were looking to gain revenge on Hong Kong after they had stunned them in Tashkent last month by recovering from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw.
The game start slowly and the first real chance did not arrive until the 13th minute, coming the way of Uzbekistan.
Server Djeparov sent a deep left wing cross towards Pavel Solomin, who lost his marker to head the ball goalwards only to see his effort nestle on top of the net.
The Uzbeks forged themselves an opportunity in the 18th minute when Zaynitdin Tadjiyev received a pass on the edge of the box, turned his marker and ran goalwards. However, goalkeeper Fan was quick off his line to block Tadjiyev’s low cross and push the ball to safety.
Fan was again called upon in the 24th minute when he parried a shot into the path of the lively Solomin, but the 24-year-old was just beaten to the ball by a defender.
A terrible error in the Uzbek defence by Andrey Fyodorov six minutes before the break gave Hong Kong a rare chance on goal, but captain Cheung Sai Ho shot just wide.
The dangerous Solomin once again found goalkeeper Fan in fine form soon after the restart as the veteran shot-stopper was equal to the striker’s drilled effort from the edge of the box.
Fan next denied Timur Kapadze, who had cut inside the box and sent a powerful low shot into the hands of the in-form goalkeeper.
But the best was to come in the 72nd minute when a decent ball from midfield found two Uzbeks forwards clear on goal and, with the crowd expecting their side’s brave rearguard to have finally been broken, Fan rushed forward and thwarted Solomin.
The visitors continued to lay siege on the Hong Kong goal and, after yet another remarkable one-handed save, Fan had to be treated for a shoulder injury.
Uzbekistan’s misery was compounded in the 84th minute when Nikolaev was sent off and Fan recovered sufficiently to ensure a hard-fought point when he palmed away a dangerous corner in the dying seconds.
