Venables casts doubts over England future
England assistant manager Terry Venables has revealed he was initially reluctant to become Steve McClaren's number two.
The former Tottenham boss also revealed he is constantly assessing his relationship with McClaren to ensure he is happy in his current role.
Venables said in the Mail on Sunday: 'I told Steve from day one that I didn't think I could do the job because it was going to be very frustrating for me.
'I had been a decision-maker for 30 years. He said to give it a go.
'I will be happy to do that for a period of time to see if we do get on. Basically, that's where we are now.'
McClaren denied a rift with Venables following October's European Championship qualifying defeat to Croatia, after which the two men gave differing reasons why Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing was dropped for the game.
