OLOF MELLBERG is desperate to mark Wayne Rooney tomorrow — because it will be a lot easier than tracking Cristiano Ronaldo.


Aston Villa’s Swedish international has played the majority of his 201 games for the club as a central defender.


But with no other cover for the injured Mark Delaney and Aaron Hughes, he has spent the last seven Premiership games filling in as an emergency right-back.


Yet the prospect of being shown a clean pair of heels by Manchester United’s flying winger at Villa Park has left him sweating.
And he has hinted to boss Martin O’Neill that now might be a good time for normal service to be resumed.


Mellberg, 29, said: “It’s been all right playing at right-back but I obviously prefer playing in the centre because I’m more comfortable there.


“I used to play right-back for Sweden when I first broke into the international team.


“But that was a long time ago and I hadn’t played there for quite some time before this season.


“I guess I’ll be marking either Ryan Giggs or Cristiano Ronaldo on Saturday. But I’d rather it was Wayne Rooney because I played against him in the World Cup in Germany last summer.


“Giggs and Ronaldo are both world-class players. But there’s something extra special about Ronaldo.


“He’s very quick and skilful with the ball at his feet and wins a lot of free-kicks.”

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised opposite number Martin O'Neill ahead of the Barclays Premiership leaders' trip to Aston Villa.

Often touted as a possible successor to Ferguson, former Celtic boss O’Neill has proved his ability on both sides of the border and Ferguson feels his attributes are easily identifiable.

“He is a good man-manager,” said Ferguson.

“He is strong and intelligent and he is not afraid of making decisions, which is important.

“Villa have done exceptionally well since he joined them.

“He has made a big impact on the club and where I really applaud him is for the way he has utilised young players.

“He has given them their opportunity and they have not let him down.”

United are looking to bounce back after last week's surprise defeat at West Ham United.

Ferguson added: “We have to make sure we get back on target. The next game is an obvious target. But the most important thing is to win the league and we are capable of doing that.”

GARDNER WANTS TO TAKE HIS CHANCE

O'Neill is confident he can test the Red Devils despite Villa’s recent results that have seen them pick up just four of the last 18 points.

He said: “We have to play United three times in three weeks but it is exciting.

“We are playing pretty well. We haven’t got the results to show for it in recent weeks but we are doing fine. If we go into the game with the same sort of confidence we have been showing, then we will certainly give them a game.

“I would expect United to sustain their challenge for the title.

“Surely Manchester United, with the capabilities they have, will be able to do something in terms of adding players - if they wanted to - in January.

“I don’t see Chelsea pulling away. United have got a really great determination about them.

“After the West Ham result, some people might say Manchester United will redouble their efforts to make sure they win this game with us.

“I am not of the belief that it is a result that has woken them up but they will roll up their sleeves and go again.”
