Fulham have been given the green light to complete their move for Clint Dempsey.

The American international has been granted a work permit allowing him to finalise his £1.5million switch to Craven Cottage.

Fulham boss Chris Coleman has been keen to push through a deal for the midfielder after pursuing him for some time.

Dempsey's MLS club New England Revolution confirmed the transfer has been given the go-ahead to go through.

"We're pleased this opportunity worked out for Clint," said New England boss Steve Nicol. "We wish him nothing but the best as he heads to the Premiership.

"He has been a tremendous player for us. Clint developed his game a great deal during his time with the Revolution.

"It's a great credit to him and the level of play in MLS that Fulham pushed so hard to get him."

Portsmouth have completed the signing of Charlton defender Djimi Traore.

The left-back moves to Fratton Park on a two-and-a-half year contract for a deal reported to be worth £1million to The Addicks.

Traore becomes manager Harry Redknapp's second signing of the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old, who only joined Charlton from Liverpool last summer, is joined on the South Coast by France Under 21 midfielder Arnold Mvuemba.

Mvuemba joined Pompey in a loan deal until the end of the season earlier this week.

Traore's place at Charlton seems certain to be taken by Manchester City's Ben Thatcher, who is on the verge of completing a move south.

Coleman Chasing More Americans          05/01/07

With the capture of Clint Dempsey only requiring UK Home Office approval, Fulham manager Chris Coleman has turned his January transfer focus to World Cup 2006 teammate Oguchi Onyewu.

The Standard Liège backline marshal drew an initial bid that was swatted away, but the Cottagers have reportedly come back with an improved offer.

"Goochy's been here to have a look around and have a chat with me," Coleman told Sky Sports News."

"We're close to agreeing a fee with Standard Liège."

Dempsey, meanwhile, will soon find out if he has clearance to join the Premiership battlers, who already boast Americans Abroad Carlos Bocanegra and Brian McBride.

"We’re completing the medical with Clint and we’ve got a date set for the tribunal next week," said Coleman. "He’s a very good attacking midfielder who will be a first team player if everything goes well."

"He’s a real good talent who can play wide left or right and I think he fits the bill in every sense."

The 23-year-old striker, who moved to the Wearside club from Blackburn Rovers FC for €2.7m, failed to impress in his time at the Stadium of Light and spent the first half of this season at Derby County FC. He has now signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Sheffield United, with his transfer fee potentially rising to €1.9m.

Warnock pledge
The former England Under-21 international is the Blades' second signing of the winter following defender Matthew Kilgallon's arrival from Leeds United AFC on Monday, but manager Neil Warnock is promising further newcomers. "I am hoping to bring in more players," he said. "It's a case of getting the right people in. We are doing very well with the spirit in the dressing room and certain players have played beyond expectation. The players I am bringing in aren't guaranteed to get in the starting lineup. They've got to fight because the team is doing quite well."
