David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and join side Los Angeles Galaxy on a £128million ($250 million) five-year deal.


The former England captain will leave Real in June and begin his new career in Major League Soccer in August.


Beckham said in a statement: 'This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons.


'After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.


'I would like to thank the supporters and people of Madrid who have made my family and I feel so welcome in my time here, making this an extremely difficult decision to make.


'I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans.


'I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own.


'For the rest of this season I will continue to give 100% to my coach, team mates and fans as I believe Fabio Capello will bring this club and its supporters the success they truly deserve.'

Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids is the latest player to be linked with a move to America.

MLS side FC Dallas claim they are in talks to sign the former Ajax and Juventus man.

Davids' future at Tottenham has been the subject of intense speculation as he struggled to hold down a regular place in Martin Jol's side this term.

Dallas coach Steve Morrow claims Spurs are willing to let Davids go and that the American club are leading the chase for the Dutchman's signature.

"We are actually in negotiations with Edgar Davids - we've been speaking for a couple of weeks," Morrow told BBC London radio.

"We were excited to hear about his availability, so we spoke to his agents and have been told he is available.

"It appears Tottenham are willing to listen to offers.

"It's the transfer window in the United States now - and if a deal is going to happen it has to be done before the end of the month."

David Beckham is set to become the first modern footballer to have a stake in the football club he plays for - and share in its profits.

"Golden Balls" - as he has been nicknamed by the tabloids - may not have a golden share but he will make money from LA Galaxy, possibly as much as $10m (£5.14m) a year in profits.

Insiders I have spoken to have painted a fascinating picture of the astonishing $250m (£128m), five-year deal he has signed with the Los Angeles team.

Indeed Beckham could earn more than $250m, perhaps as much as $275m, over the period of his contract.

I understand his yearly income from next season, when he leaves Spain for America, will be:

An annual salary of $10m

#
His existing sponsorship contracts with his four sponsors - Motorola, Pepsi, Gillette and Volkswagen - are estimated to be worth $25m

#
His merchandising shirt sales will bring in $10m

#
His share of the club profits: $10m

That adds up to $55m. Multiply it by five and you get well over $275m.

Hence the bold claim made by his commercial agent Simon Fuller of 19 Entertainment, who holds the rights for the Beckham brand.

He told me. "I have long dreamt of being responsible for the biggest sporting deal. With the help of David Beckham and his unique sporting talents I have helped achieve my aim."

Beckham may no longer dream of playing for England.

He may end his career in the relative soccer backwaters of the United States.

But if his agent's calculations are right, he will go out dreaming of the millions that will pour into his bank while he vanishes from the European stage he has dominated for so long.
