ASHLEY YOUNG can cap the most miserable week of Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool reign today — and then secure himself a move to Anfield.
The Watford forward is the hottest young property of the transfer window with boss Aidy Boothroyd admitting he has turned down bids from seven different clubs, including a £7million cash offer.
Liverpool and his boyhood favourites Arsenal are leading the chase.
And former Hornets boss Ray Lewington believes the kid he knew as a talented lightweight is certain to make it as a top-flight heavyweight.
That could mean a move to Liverpool, who are reeling from back-to-back cup humiliations by Arsenal as they visit the Premiership’s bottom club today.
“They have Arsenal and Tottenham on their doorstep competing for kids like Ash and it’s down to David’s hard work he signed for Watford.”
Young, 21, was an Arsenal fan who idolised Ian Wright as a kid growing up in Stevenage but was not allowed posters of his hero on his bedroom wall because dad Luther was a Spurs supporter.
Arsenal’s training ground is next door to Watford’s in London Colney — although the outstanding performance of Wenger’s young Guns in the 6-3 Carling Cup demolition of Liverpool means the Frenchman is unlikely to meet Watford’s £8million valuation.
West Ham and Aston Villa have also made bids but Boothroyd insists he is can keep Young until the end of the season.
Lewington said: “Knowing Ash, he will knuckle down and do his best to keep Watford in the Premiership if he stays.”
Liverpool provide the next test and Boothroyd is expecting a backlash.
He said: “Liverpool are like a wounded animal and someone will pay. We must make sure it is not us. If it was a difficult game before they lost to Arsenal, it’s far more difficult now.”
